Just wanted to thank everyone here for help the last coulpe of weeks. I finished the rebuild and put it the tank yesterday. Double cecked connection and lines and pump the fuel bulb and turned the key. It started right up, smoked a bit but I'm running on the extra oil. The lake is closed till next week due to all the flooding here, but next week time for breakin. Again thanks for all the help and I will post after the lake runs.

Just an update on the rebuild, I made it to the lake this week and all run well. Started right up at the ramp and ran through about 12 gallons of fuel at a mixture of 50:1 in a remote tank and the vro pumping oil for the main tank thats been disconnected for the break in period. The vro oil tank has dropped from the mark I made at the start so I now its pumping, pump is 1 yr old. I have a question, I run 100% pennzoil synthetic oil. Can I reduce the 50:1 gradually, it's smoking oil real bad to the point it won't burn all the oil and it's going unburned into the lake. I thought at one time I saw a post about running at 75:1 on the remoted tank with the vro running. In advanced that for the replies in the past under other posts fpr this rebuild.

You know the oil pump is working but theres only a couple of hours on the motor. I would start backing off slowly on the premix. 75:1 is probably OK especially since your still breaking it in and being careful. Just keep an eye on the oil level. <br /><br />It kinda concerns me when you say its smoking real bad with 100% synthetic. I use the Pennzoil blend and accidently mixed 50 gallons at double once and the motor didnt really smoke bad at all. What spark plugs are you using? <br /><br />Thats some great oil! Good luck!

Thanks dhadley, I using champion QL77JC4 gapped at .040 . I set the timing with out running the engine minus the 4 degrees as a starting point until I can set it as the engine breaks in. Also recirc valves are new and recirc lines and nipples are either been replaced or were clear. Any Ideas, all the plugs look light brown, It only smokes at idle. The carbs were rebuild durning this project, I just may pull them and check the floats again. Thanks

Good choice on plugs. The floats being set high or low wont make it smoke. If it only smokes at idle, I'd not worry about it unless something is just giving you a gut feeling to look at the carbs again.<br /><br />Sounds like you did a good job!

update from weekend. The motor now has 8hrs on the rebuild, starts great. Idle is good but on getting the boat on a plan the motor stalls, if I push in the primer button it takes off like no problem. At mid range it surges until I hit the primer on and off and it will smooth out. At full throttle it runs smooth no surges. I'm still running on a 6gallon remote tank at 75:1 and the vro which is pumping the oil as well. I think I pulled junk into the carbs due to not running the fuel filter/water seperator thats attached to the 30 gallon tank on the boat. Can this be a elec problem. If anybody has this problem please enlighten me. Thanks as always

The thing that concerns me on this post is breaking in the engine on synthetic, Not a good Idea in anyones book. Surprised someone hasnt said anything to this point!

Your hitting the primer and getting the engine to smooth out proves it is is lean. The midrange surge does too.<br /><br />Get into those carbs, you DO NOT want to ruin a new rebuild job.

I replaced all gaskets on the intake manifold an carbs, I believe one carcb mid range jet is fouled will check this weekend. On the synthetic oil, I have used this oil for 23 yrs in racing 2 stroke motor cycles and running outboard motors (5) total for about 2500 hrs and not failures due to an oil issuse. Everyone has their oponion and thats a good thing. All be well and I'll post back after the weekend. end of break in! I'll also give commpression reading after the break in. This threw a red flag up for me considering double oil and short WOT times.<br />Beings DH is involved, I'll stay out but it seems lean to me BEFORE you had to start hitting the primer.....

Sounds lean to me. Among other things like clogged fuel delivery or an air leak...it might be the fuel pump diaphram isn't priming up well until the choke helps it. Pumping the bulb is a good indicator. I can't remember plugged jets getting much help from pumping the bulb but fuel pump, clogged lines and air leaks yes.

Just got back from lake. I checked out fuel pump pressure ok, The problem turned ou to be the remote tank. Added oil to main tank hooked the water fuel seperator and changed out fuel bulb. Ran motor for the last 2 hrs of break in no problems, Ran it up to top end for 2 minutes, ran at 5800rpms not surging. Hard to believe a 6 gallon tank greated all this. Thanks to everyone, Ill post after the holidays.

Excellent job and follow-up!<br /><br />Sounds like youre good to go! As you play with the set up dont be afraid of more rpm. Your OK now but loopers like rpm. Raise the motor a hole or two. See what happens.
