You may want to check the model number on that engine again to verify what year the engine is. OMC did not make an 86 185 hp engine. They did in 1985, model numbers: 185tlcoc and 185txcoc. The 1984/5 185 was a flatback crossflow V6 identical to the 200 hp from 1983, which got caught up in the industry shift from crankshaft hp ratings to propshaft hp ratings. The 185 was propshaft rated instead of crankshaft rated like the earlier 200's. In 1986 OMC made a bubble back 175 crossflow which was a de-rated 235. That 175 was prop rated and made more hp than the decal on the cowling indicated.

I wouldn't pay more than 400 to $500 for a motor almost 25 years old and only if in A1 shape. They're not like fine wine, which get more valuable with age. NADA shows $365 for an average condition 225.

The engine will have value if the compression is good, around 100 lbs on each cyl. Also, if the oil in the lower unit is clear-no water intrusion. Oil/fuel pumps are outrageously expensive (nearly $ 450) so make sure it is ok/functioning. Make sure you get the oil tank and lines too. Make sure the trim works. These were very popular engines in their day, so parts for these engines are still readily available from Bombardier and many aftermarket businesses.
