Hi everyone, I purchased a 1982 Bomber Sportsman boat by Fiber King in the fall. I'm just starting to dig into the motor('86 35 hp Merc). The previous owner said it ran alright until the "flywheel magnets came off". The seller did give me the magnets. My question is how hard is it to put these magnets back on the flywheel? I also am going to buy new plugs. The ones currently in it are NGK BUHW(the permanent surface gap ones). Should I keep this plug or should I go with the Champion L76V that my SELOC manual specifies. Thanks!

The engine probably came with NGK plugs. Are the current plugs fouled? They can last many years, my 84 115 still had the factory plugs in it when I traded it in 98. I think you should try finding a replacement Flywheel.

I read somewhere that these plugs can last a long time too. Good to know. I will do some searching to try and find a replacement flywheel. I haven't pulled the flywheel but I will soon and post photos of the plugs and the inside of the flywheel. I can also post a photo of the magnets that the guy gave me. Thank you for the response!

I have read that you can rough up the flywheel and epoxy them back on. I'm just not quite sure how to determine exactly where to glue them back on? I also read you have to be careful to use a thin layer of epoxy, so you don't close the gap too much

I haven't tried to re-glue marine engine magnets on a flywheel, but I have done that a few times on lawn mower engines with perfect success. I used JB Weld epoxy glue and never had any issues again. If you can determine exactly where they should go on, and that should be visibly easy to see, I would re-glue them back on myself. I am sure others have different ideas and once you read them all, you determine what you want to do. JMHO

You can't change the title, but I can and did. Welcome aboard.

One other concern is getting the polarity of the magnets oriented properly when reattaching them. No idea if they are N-N or N-S. Hope one of the members knows.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I will remove the flywheel and take pictures when I get the time, hopefully soon. Until then I will try to find some tips on replacing the magnets. Like GA_Boater said I'm not sure how to determine what direction to put them in for the polarity. Hopefully I will visibly be able to see where they were before. I will hopefully update with pictures soon.

GA_Boater is correct. If they are N-N or N-S is important. But again the magnets, if intact, will give that info too. The were initially glued on and where they let lose will be pretty obvious and you should be able to determine their direction for a fit as well. I've done some 15 HP engines that way and it really wasn't hard to make that determination. JMHO

If two magnets are still attached, you could use one of the loose ones to figure out the orientation. Like poles repel and unlike poles attract. Or so I learned in high school science class a couple of years ago.

Thanks for all of the help and information everyone! I ordered the flywheel puller tool. As soon as that comes I will pull the wheel and post some photos.

Well...I have some pretty dissapointing news. So I've been waiting for lower unit screw gaskets to come in the mail to change the lower unit oil. Once I get it changed I was planning on checking compression. And then digging into the ignition problem after that. Well unfortunately I was showing my friend one of the magnets and we accidentally dropped it and it broke into like 5 pieces when exchanging hands. Really frustrating:facepalm:. Now I have one good magnet and a bunch of pieces. I've heard you cant buy them. And the only replacement flywheel I can find on ebay is over 200 dollars. Just frusterating. If anyone has any advice that would be great. Here is the part # for flywheel: 242-7912A12 thanks
