1986 40 Yamaha 2 Stroke

I have a 86 40 yamaha 2 stroke 3 cylinder short shaft.I put a rectifer on it and it charges the battery, but tach not working. I want to check the wires coming from under the flywheel there are to greens. Does anyone know how to check to see if I'm getting a signal from motor to tach. Want to check with a meter what does it need to be set on?

My engine is a 92 55 HP. On mine if I meter from ground to the green wire I can see the alternator pulses using a frequency meter (my Fluke meter in frequency mode).

I don't have a pulse coming from my green wire what do I need to do?
