can someone tell me if a stator in a 86 40hp evinrude with elec start can drain the battery over time. Or what might cause the battery to go dead and I dont think the battery is getting charged when I use the motor for trolling because I cannot start my other motor at the end of the day.

check your battery voltage when it is running. those motors only have a 6 amp output at wide open throttle, so it is not going to charge much idling. what else do you have working off that battery. the motor runs off the stator, not the battery, so it should not discharge. have the battery load tested at auto parts store.

All true. However even at idle, the battery should not discharge unless you are running another load as tashasdaddy suggested. A battery is just like a water bucket, you can't get more out of it than you put in it. I recently did the same thing, I ran at idle all morning and shut it off to look at some manatees. Wouldn't re-crank. Then I realized I was running a 12v cooler. Duh!! I should have known better.

Oh, did I mention, they start just fine with a rope?
