anyone have a trick in getting the lu off a 45hp, classic 50? the lu dropped 1/2" and thats it. we have tried using metal shims as wedges and a 3 pound small sledge hammer. all the nuts and bolts are loose, tried hitting the starter too. still wont slide off.
am i missing something?
anyone come across this? and by looking at the trigger i think im gonna have the same hard time getting the darn flywheel off as well.

Is the motor attached to the boat? I did 2 things to get off my pesky L/U. 1. if you can invert the motor spray deep creep on the driveshaft and let it ride down. 2. I strapped a come along through where the L/U was separating and put the other end to a tree. I slowly ratcheted it and got it loose.

Howd you get it off? Did you crack the housing by being too gentle while separating them? : ) Now, when you put the L/U back in you will be sure to use marine grade lubricant on the driveshaft splines, right?

yes the lower unit cracked near the anode. we used wooden wedges. whoever did the last impeller job, used some type of glue (not sealent) on the lower unit. then never greased the splines. i was so lucky that my old lu off a 72 40hp fit.

Cool man Im glad for ya!! Nothing like having old parts around to make the job cost less and take less time. Just make sure that the gear ratio is the same. It doesn't seem to make a huge difference in any motor that I have run, but some people will beg to differ. If the ratio is off, you just need to do a prop change to keep your RPMs where they are supposed to be. An easy way to check is to mark one of the splines of the driveshaft, and prop or propshaft, then spin the driveshaft. If the propshaft spins 2 times to every one spin of the driveshaft then you have a 2:1 ratio. Just check it on both units if you even care.....

Correction, If driveshaft spins twice to every one spin of propshaft then you have a 2:1 ratio.

im guessing that the ratio should be pretty close, the lu is at the mechanics house about 40 miles away. 72merc was a 2 cyl 40. the 89 thats hanging on the boat is a 89, 45hp. the 89 had a relief vent and the 72 lacks the vent, no biggie.
