Could be a bad fuel pump, filter, or could have a partially restricted fuel system. Or, maybe you forgot to open the vent on the gas tank?

the tank is built into the engine? If so, it may be above the carb so it may not have a pump. I would pull the fuel line off at the carb and see if you have good fuel flow.

Make another test run and while running at WOT try to watch the primer bulb. If it is being sucked flat, there is a fuel restriction in the pickup in the tank or between the tank and the primer bulb. If the engine tries to die, hit the choke quickly. If the engine picks up this points to a definite fuel problem. More than likely time for a carb rebuild and while you are at it, rebuild the fuel pump.

To add to Upinsmokes suggestion, when it starts to die squeeze the bulb too. If that picks it back up you probably have a bad fuel pump, or an air leak down stream of the bulb.

Your vent to the fuel tank could be plugged.

I vote for a piece of crud that got sucked into the fuel line. Long storage. Vibration. Breaks loose.

well, i went fishing yesterday after i have rebuilt the carbs and replaced primer bulb and did a good inspection of the fuel line and found no air leaks.and tank vent is clear. the motor is still doing the same thing, this motor does not have a fuel pump in the tank. i guess the pump is in the vro?where do i go from here?

thanks ben c.

Does the engine shut off completly or just lose rpms? If it shuts off completely I would suspect and electrical problem if you are sure that your fuel system is in good order. If it just loses rpms I would suspect a bad powerpack or ground from the powerpack.

When it shuts off and does not start right away check for spark. If you have none then you need to trace it backward. Start with the ground wire on your powerpack. Get a manual it will pay for itself in labor charges and time you spend. It also gives you a methodical way to go. The problem stills sounds electrical to me as in a wire that is moving/overheating and shorting out. The pros will be along shortly. They never forget a poster. Best forum ever.

took off to the lake sunday for some fishing.got going down the lake, it was doing good for about 5 mins. them out of no where it just quit, and i thought i had it fixed too.i had replaced the fuel filter before this trip and found that the old one was very dirty.after the motor shut off i waited a min or two and tried to fire it up.it finely started but was only runing on one cylinder so i just trolled back in and went home wondering what to do to fix it.

If you dropped a cylinder then the powerpack has to be bad. Check for spark. If you have spark to one cylinder then swap the powerpack/coil and see if the problem follows. If it does then you have to replace it.

I can't give you advice on HOW to fix it, but I am dealing and in the middle of the same kind of problem. In addition to what your saying though, I have a high idle RPM. After doing many of the same things you have, I have come up with the PRIMER being an issue. Check to make sure it's not stuck open.

First, verify that your blue/white wire from the ignition is not always hot, it should only be hot when you push the key in.

Then do the same check at the Fuel Primer/choke. If you don't have an electric choke, then your on your own.

Last step, check the Red lever (manual choke) on top of the primer. Other forums concersations have what positions it's supposed to be in, unfortionately someone removed my lever with a knob with no indications, so I am working from this point blind.

Good luck and let us know what it was in the end!
