I'm pretty much new to boats. So I may be missing something here...
The Back Story:
I bought a 17' ranger 235v with a 75 hp merc on the back with no spark. I've put on a new stator, trigger and CDI. This brought me spark. The failed component was the CDI. I thought this was it so I took it to the water and to my surprise it wouldn't throttle up. So came home checked my fuel and found a small amount of water in the fuel. I put all new fuel in and brought a separate tank of fuel. The motor still wouldn't run. I replaced all the fuel lines (with automotive line for now), and rebuilt the fuel pump, cleaned the carbs and it would run up to half throttle. As soon as the primaries started drawing fuel it would bog. Checked the carbs and now it was spraying fuel from the bottom carb and not the top. I nursed the top carb with starting fluid and it cleared out. but was still running rough. Got me up to 23mph up stream.
While it was running 23 I attempted to set the timing which I had to turn the screw all the way in to full retard, it was still a bit high like 25 degrees. I then replaced in the top carb the float, needle and seat. and the idle mixture need. Took it back out and it took off great, sounded ok and then pittered out and died. When I checked the carbs this time the bottom carb wasn't spraying. I said to hell with these carbs and put the carbs off of a 70s 85hp motor I have. These carbs spray fuel nicely but it's still hitting a rough spot at half throttle.
At this point I have:
Removed and siphon barb replaced with open barb.
Checked compression which were all 120+
Checked spark with gap tester
Replaced fuel and fuel lines
Rebuilt fuel pump
Plugs - new
Stator - new
Trigger - new
CDI - new
swapped carbs
My problems are
1 Boat runs good up to half throttle. As soon as it hits half throttle it starts rattling / missing. Once up to 23 it clears up a little, but still sounds like it's knocking.
2 I would think this boat should be faster than 23mph
Thank you in advance for any help!
