1986 85hp force need a tach

I would like to hook up a tach to my 85hp force but the amount of different tachs is mind boggling to say the least.Iam familer with tachs for cars but they are for 4,6or 8 cylinder motors not three!I beleive the schemtic on the motor shows a purple wire?for hooking up the tach on the motor wiring.This is on a 1986 16ft fish N ski bayliner,a fun boat but i don,t see any around or on any web sites that i've looked at, must not have been a very popular boat back then... anyway any recemendtions on what kind and how to wire it up would be much appreciated.

You may be in luck, I've got a 1986 bayliner capri w/ an 85 force. I was in the same situation and bought a tach for it that initially did not work. I called and they sent me another one, still didn't work. I found out the problem was my rectifier. Changed that out and I have a working tach. Long story short I have an extra tach if you'd like for a 20 pole motor. If you'd be interested in it feel free to shoot me an email at bons0010@d.umn.edu
