Hey guys and gals I need help I just bought a boat with an 85hp Force 1986.
The control box is loose so I need to find a bolt to fasten it perminant to the side wall. I have it pretty sturdy currently with a clamp. My problem is When I run the motor at full speed for a few minutes anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes it will appear to come out of gear an slip to neutral. However the motor is still in gear. I can pull it back to neutral then back in gear and it will re-engage and run fine for a few more minutes. As long as you don't give it full power it will run OK but the boat doesn't fully plane out. I do know the trim is not correct as the bow doesn't level out completely anyway. It has a manual trim bar on it but it makes the bow too high. The motor seems strong but it just comes out of gear. I am very adept with working on my truck and my bike although an outboard is new to me mechanic wise. I have a manual althought I don't know how good it is I bought the disk online. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance

You'll need to fix your control mounting problem before you tackle adjusting the shift and throttle cables - which is most likely why you're slipping out of gear.

It may not be a control problem. The hub in the prop may be spun. Put a line on the prop and hub (waterproof marker). Run the boat. After you have the problem lift the motor and see if the line is still aligned. if not, you have a prop problem.

Sounds like a plan if it is spun what would ba a possible solution?

You send it out for repair or buy a new prop. If you google propeller repair, you will find places that rehub props. West Marine has a service where they will send it out for you.
