1986 9.9hp running slow :( Help!

Hi all,

I bought this motor a couple years ago and it ran like a dream last year. The guy recommended I use mercury oil in the gas but it is pretty hard to find so I am just using crappy tire 2 stroke oil for outboards. Problem?

Anyways, I took it out this year and ran it with the gas from last year. It ran poorly so I emptied the old gasand changed the spark plugs which were black and checked for spark. I also cleaned the carb and put the fuel/air ratio at 1.5 turns.

I took it out again and it ran pretty good until I was on my way back to the launch and going full throttle it bogged right down and stalled. When I started it back up it would die as soon as I put it in gear. A couple tries later I was able to limp it very slowly in gear. Soo, I took it home and ran it in a garbage can full of water and played with the air/fuel ratio a little. It seemed to run fine.

I took it out on the water yesterday and at full throttle it only goes about 1/3 or so the speed of which it used to!!?

I know very little about boat motors...so any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Perhaps you sucked some crud into the carbs that was stirred up in your tank when after you started running old gas.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

I took the carb apart today and it was spotless. I also looked at the plugs and they were clean but had a little oil on them.

I am stumped..

I must have been stoned yesterday when I checked for spark because I think I forgot to turn the motor on.

Anyways, the ignition module is definitely outputting a better signal on the wire going to the upper spark plug. I swapped the two spark plugs, and then the two coils, and it is definitely coming from the module.

I tried checking the points to see if they are corroded but I can't get the flywheel off! I think I need a puller.
