Boat has ran great all season but here towards the end I have developed a chirp. I originally thought it was a simple alternator belt replacement but after removing the belt and running for a few seconds it still chirps. I thought it would be the tensioner, tensioner is also good, I replaced it anyway because it has never been replaced. The only thing I can think of now is the timing belt which hasn't been replaced ever.

As I go to change the timing belt with a new one I have the cam at 12 o'oclock and the crankshaft in the correct position as well. The auxillery shaft is supposed to be marked at 3'oclock but it isn't even close. The boat runs great as is so I assume the position of the aux doesn't matter? Doesn't it drive the oil pump? Would it matter? I really don't like the idea of rotating it to the correct position due to it running great as is. What to do?

Most likely in the past the belt was replaced and the distributor‘s wires were moved around to compensate. Since the genuine Volvo belts are marked it is not hard to line up everything. Sometimes when the belt tensioner is released it will cause the belt to jump a tooth on one of the sprockets. So you have to be careful to recheck it. It takes about 25 revolutions to ”walk” the marks to the starting point marks on the sprockets.

Well, I just left everything in the position it was in when I took it off. Put the new belt on, the old one looked to be in great shape but it was STRETCHED. Doesn't chirp anymore with the new belt on.
