Wellll, I bought a boat. Knew next to nothing about boats except the great memories I had on my family?s boat when I was younger. Found a 1986 Bayliner Capri 1650 bowrider with a Volva/Penta sitting on a beautiful trailer for $800. Motor runs great after I rebuilt the carburetor. Replaced the impeller, new plugs/wire, and changed oil and filter. Not worried about the motor or outdrive whatsoever.
Everything looked good until I started reading the iboats forum and tearing back the carpet on deck. I then went through restoration denial
After being snapped back to reality I?m trying to figure out what direction to go. It looks like the previous owner simply slapped down some osb on top of the rotted deck, filled in the sides with good ol? filling foam and called it a day. So I knew for sure I wanted to replace the deck and so today I started flinging off the osb to see what else I could find and what do you know, the stringers are rotted too
. Drilled three random holes in the transom and there are no signs of rot there, which has me confused, how is that possible when the stringers are in bad shape? I need opinions. What would you do? I am currently not working but going to school full time so I have the time to do what is needed. I want a boat that will last for at least a few summers of enjoyment.
I would like to spend the least amount of money possible, who wouldn?t?, but want to do things right. How much resin are we talking about to do the stringers and deck? I?m willing to move forward, guess I just need the reassurance that I?m not in over my head and that it's worth it. Also, I?m wondering if it?s possible to put in new stringers and do the deck with out having to lift out motor and take the outdrive off? Sorry for all the rambling!
Melissa
