1986 Bayliner Tropy Bassboat

My steering is VERY stiff and would like to replace the cable or entire system. How do I determine what to replace it with and where would be the best place to start?

Welcome to iboats!

I take it this is an outboard. If so, start by disconnecting the steering arm at the motor. See if the motor swings easily and if the helm turns easily. Whichever doesn't is the problem.

Look under the dash and see what company makes your set up. Then take the #'s off you cable and order a new one. Remove it off the motor first and see if the wheel is still hard to turn. Also see if the motor swings back and forth easy. Im going thru the same thing w/ my boat. Its my cable that is shot.

ok, this maybe a very dumb question so don't take offence...... but is the knob under the steering wheel on the steering colum losened up? just thought i would ask, when i got my 88 bay bass i had no clue what it was for.

Yes it's an outboard. Force 125. Original on the boat. Still runs GREAT!

yea it took me a couple of times out before I realized what that knob was for too.As soon as I loosened it my wheel spun around I have a 87 trophy fish and ski with a 125 on er too.
