Re: 1986 Capri 1600 O/B Remodel Project

Finally got the last remnants of the rear base fiberglass sanded out. Now it looks like there never was a rear base. A couple picts. The floor looks wet b/c I wiped with floor down with a damp cloth to get all the dust cleaned off for the Durabak.

Installed the floor piece over the two supports (with fiberglass), should be good to go.

Added a 3rd coat of Durabak to the floor and the first coat to the new piece. I'm using a quart/coat so I've got one coat for the floor left to go. The ski locker is done, so I can get a couple more coats on the new piece.

I have to say, so far, I can give Durabak a big thumbs up. It dries rubbery, and is definitely non-skid. I don't know if it'll take out all the imperfections, but its gone a long way, and the floor looks great.

Here's a couple progress pictures:

Made some more progress. Gauges are in. Rear bench is taking shape as well:

Installed the lower backs to the seat bases. This section will have matching blue carpet on them. The upper part will be hinged to open at the top and allow for rope & bumper storage.

Sides to bench seat. These will have cup holders in them, and can be used as a step when getting in & out of the boat, so the upholstery doesn't have to be stepped on.

Here's the rear seat support for the bench seat. Although it could support the weight, I could tell that it would give a bit when I sat on it, so I made this to add more support to it. Its...get this...closet dowel holders, with a large dowel. Sometimes, the simplest things can be the perfect solution.

Next:

Here's the room my wife will have for the sundeck. Its not huge, but it will work. I have some work to do yet before I get there. The pink foam board is just my rough mockup still...it'll be plywood in a few days.

Re: 1986 Capri 1600 O/B Remodel Project

I did find out some more info about the boat after talking to my coworker.

He purchased the boat from a storage yard after it was apparently abandoned by the previous owner. It sat uncovered at that yard for years, being used occasionally. He purchased it, took it to the marina, got it running. They had to replace the linkage cables, and give it a tune up. He used it a few times on their vacations to MN.

I'd forgotten that part, that he resurrected it, so I'm feeling pretty good about finishing the job of bringing her back. He's enjoying the progress picts as well.

Just some minor progress. Installed & sealed the new drain plug, which led me to an issue I hadn't thought of...the new seat back makes getting to the bilge area really difficult & uncomfortable. So, I mounted the seat back on hinges so it can fold up and out of the way. In keeping with my "spend as little as possible" quest, I reused the hinges that came with the rear bench I ordered from Wise...as you can see, I need to modify them a bit, but they're gonna work well.

The boat took a HUGE leap forward. The electrical is DONE! (Spent 10 mins doing the final install.)

I know that probably sounds like nothing, but...I had to trace wire after wire, some spliced 3x (Grey/Red stripe -> Red -> White -> Grey) for connection to the Navigation light, spliced & tapped wires to the bow lights for Radio power...and on and on, it was a mess!

Its been an on going battle since the rebuild began, but, I traced the last one today and got it fixed...the result. Every switch works, every button, and I confirmed that the horn is fried, not the switch (which was a PIA to trace)...and the Bilge is wired in and functional...just need to connect the line and drill the hole.

The dash is mounted, and the window is back in as well. I still feel awful, but the electrical gremlins should be gone now.

Ok, I started the boat up! I needed a little inspiration to keep me going.

I finally figured out what I need to do for the sundeck as well, so I'm going to have to wait for the part I'm ordering to come in.

I posted video of it running with the telltale modification I made, and I think its going to be a great modification.

Well, after spending most of a day on my back sanding...my arms and neck are really sore! That's a lot of elbow grease for this desk jockey...so I took most of the day off to enjoy the holiday.

All I got done was to take out and recut the rear seat. I noticed a problem that when I opened the rear bench back, it was so close to the hull that the pads on the sides wouldn't fit. So I cut the seat back down an inch. When I do those pads, I'll have to account for that. My thought is to make that part carpet, or upholstery with no padding. The part that's all stapled in is where the hinge is tight against upholstery. (Its ugly, but since its the old stuff, I was ok with just seeing what I could do with it for a mock up.)

I also got the rear sundeck cut and somewhat finalized:

Re: 1986 Capri 1600 O/B Remodel Project

Oh...and I tested the bilge pump out...I hated to start filling the boat with water...but I'd rather have it fail on me in the driveway, than on the lake!

I'm pleased to report that it works just fine.

AND....

The Tach doesn't work. Its dead. I've got a good circuit, power, I can tell its getting the same power that's at the source at the motor, as is coming in to the gauge, the battery volts are accurate, and the ground is good...nothing...it just sits there mocking me with its silence. ugh.

So, over the winter, I'll go to all new Teleflex Red Int'l gauges. I'm not taking that all apart again this year, without knowing I've got a good gauge. I should have tested it at the motor first before installing it.

Cleaned up a couple rust spots on the hull:

After:

And finished the main portion of the sundeck. I'm not sure it won't need more support, but its mostly done.

A couple of stainless steel hinges to give a little extra shine.

I still need to add the hinged piece that will flip up out of the way for the outboard to tilt for trailering. Next year (provided we receive a bonus at work), I'll add the CMC power Tilt/Trim until which will set the motor back farther, and I don't think the hinged piece will be needed any longer.

Just installed the port side pad and started cutting out the ski locker floor.

A couple pictures, more staples to allow for the hinge to clear...ugly I know.

Re: 1986 Capri 1600 O/B Remodel Project

I 'finished' the final sundeck today. Now, its not sealed yet, but, it is the last big 'technical' hurdle I needed to get over.

I am almost to this years finish line...besides, I need to get out on the water and actually enjoy it. This project has been a great stress reliever from work. Work...ah work. There are some really great things there, but there are some work stresses with it too...which, I know is no different than anyone else.

Anyway, here is this weekends progress so far:

With everything fully 'down'. I ended up with 20" of sundeck, which I can easily lay on.
