Re: 1986 Capri 1600 O/B Remodel Project

Anyway, that's pretty much the work I've put into the boat thus far. All totaled I've spent about 9 months (with very little work during the winter months) of work on this boat, and less than $350.00 in out of pocket costs.

Which means I've got $1100 into this boat all totaled.

This fall I'll start the bow area.

Looks great and runs great. What more could you ask for?! I LOVE the bench seat you put in the back.

Incredible dude,

Love how you engineer things.

Makes my re-think my interior, I so want the bench/sun-pad config, with captains chair style seats. I could have a ton of additional storage. If I ever did that I may also think re-power...

Again,

Great work!

PS, Is that the textured Durabak?

Thanks!

Its actually the smooth Durabak. I have honestly been a bit disappointed with its durability. It 'cuts' more easily than I would have hoped, stains easily, and I'm actually planning to carpet the floor...which I really really didn't want to do.

Its nice on the feet though, and the white stays very cool to the touch, so no burned feet.

Opening up, and removing the water logged flotation foam cavities has created a lot more storage.

Ever thought of snap-in carpet? Then you can remove and wash down the deck... Check out my resto project link, I used the textured Durabak, like it but it also seems to hard to clean. The tops of the texture seem to stain, I may re-coat with a coat of smooth durabak..

Well, before you do that...I need to post a picture of how my floor looks after 4 uses...I probably could switch to a darker color and solve 99% of my problems.

Snap in carpet, I have thought about it. The issue I have is simply justifying the cost of it on a $750 boat. I'm not trying to make it a show winner, just a clean, decent boat that the family isn't embarrassed to be seen in. Snap in carpet, unless I've priced it wrong, can get spendy!

What did you use for the gelcoat repairs and where did you get it?

Also, I dont have any but for future reference, how did you remove the rust stains?

Wow! that sure came out nice. Neat job of engineering the platform and seat back. And the boat looks to be riding with a great attitude in the video. It really jumps right on plane in 2 - 3 seconds! That old Force is obviously still pushing a few horse power. Glad the prop worked out well.

BTW, if/when you had a full load and adults sitting in the back, did the swim step drag the water and splash the motor cowl on takeoff?

I have had great success with CLR (Calcium, Lime, Rust) straight on vinyl, swim step and gel coat. Bad stains take about 3 applications. Seems to work best when the applications are spread out over 2 or 3 days. Put it on in the morning, wash in after noon, apply again in evening, wash in morning, etc.

There could be better products, but this is the first I tried and its working for me.

I used Barkeepers Friend, its a powder you can mix up with water into a paste and just let it sit and do its magic on the boat. Works great, but can take some 'soak' time to completely remove it all. $1.99 at Home Depot.

It jumps on plane amazingly fast. I love that Piranha prop, LOVE it.

The swim step never gets wet unless the ladder falls out...otherwise its totally out of the water at all times.

I honestly am very happy with how its turned out.

Next step is to remove the red pinstriping and get it switched to the light blue to match the new interior.

Where did you get those hinges for the backrest? Those look like the cats meow.

They actually were the hinges attached to the bench seat. I took them off and reused them.

Hi dorelse!

Your project came out really well. One thing that my changes/projects ended up doing was to make the little 1600 Cuddy stern heavy. To make things worse, the cuddy version of the 1600 has the seats farther back in the boat than the bow rider model. I think the cuddy is longer than the bow seating area. Adding the large fuel tank, along with passengers in the rear when at capacity makes it hard to get on plane. The bow rises but the 85hp struggles to get up on plane. Usually putting a couple of kids in the cuddy takes care of the problem.

This season I'm going to look into trim tabs. Probably Smart Tabs would work well for this boat. Might also move the battery to under the storage compartments in the cuddy, and possibly add another battery.

I would like to know where you got all the guages. I just bought a 1983 Bayliner Capri and restoring it. I have found a volt, fuel, and oil guage of the same type, but need the mph, rpm, and temp guage.

Proof that an OEM outboard Tach exists, and I've got one!
