Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame. You walk all over the deck, that a mallot, or hammer with wooden handle, using handle, tap all over the transom, a shape rap is good solid base, a thud, is questionable base.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. (This part for outboard motors Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,)
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.

A 30 year old boat motor combo, may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.

Thanks for the above - I will pass it on.

Does anyone have any thoughts to the specific boat above?

On boats this old no one is going to have any useful info for you on the boat in general. Even if someone has the exact same model their experiences will still be anecdotal at best. We need more information like what engine/outdrive are in the boat. Those we can comment on. For example, if it has an OMC drive you need to take into consideration the difficultly in obtaining repair parts.

Get it Inspected. Period. Please learn from mine (and others) mistakes. My $5200 boat cost me $8900.

Thank you - I'll find out if it is OMC - have seen on this forum how hard it is to get parts/service.

Thanks again.

I bought a Celeb in the Fall. 1985 21' Bowrider. 350 merc. It's a good boat for me but these guys are right...it's all about how it was taken care of. I bought mine from a freind who had done a lot of restoration and I have continued. My advice...GET IT InSPECTED by a professional. It will be well worth the $50 to $100. That model Celeb is a heavy boat and quite tall. Mine needs trim tabs because it rides heavy aft. Smart tabs are my next purchase.
Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the replies. Turn out it is an OMC, so we'll keep looking.
