Hey guys,
I posted the last two days regarding powerhaed removal. I have got great response and cant thank everyone enough, however, I still am a bit confused.

I picked up the Seloc 1973-91 repair manual. I can't find any real good information about how to pull the powerhead or anything about replacing the upper mounts I need to do.
My questions:
1) Is there a better manual with more details I should be looking at?
2) Looking at the front I see 2 bolts, the back i see 3. I assume there are more bolts to remove??..Does anyone know how many there are so i can be sure I have them all??
3) I have got response that removing the lower unit first can make the rest go smoother. Is that imperative or can it be done without doing that
4) The manual only speaks to tearing down the power head and calls for removing carbs, flywheel etc.. I assume I do not have to do all that for a simple removal to acess the mounts?

ANY help would be appreciated...I thought the repair manual would give me views and step by step.. this manual is not that good...I do not want to remove any bolts before knowing exactly what I am in for..

Thanks!!

Get an OEM manual: outboardbooks.com or Ebay

Most around here consider 3rd party books like Seloc and Clymer to be good beer coasters.

Wilde1j...is there a title for the OEM book or is that it?..

after looking at this Seloc book..I can see why you say it would make for a better coaster...awful..

Can't stress enough the value of an OEM manual.
Seloc are a good guideline
Clymer are good as toilet tissue but not as absorbent.

Hi, This is the way I did mine. First mine was on a engine stand, but being on the boat shouldn't change much.

1. remove the lower cowling, this will give you access to the 6 long bolts that go thru the mid section to powerhead, remove the 3 rear bolts and 4 front bolts. loosen the shift lever bolt and remove bolt

2. disconnect throttle cables, gas lines and any harness's

3. using a suitable lifting ring lift powerhead off midsection. At first I just used a strap around each cylinder head and lifted, I later borrowed a lifting ring that fits the flywheel, this was much easier when I reinstalled.

If just changing the upper mount, using a breaker bar and correct short socket, you can loosen the upper mount bolts, then remove the upper mount plate and bolts. replace mount and reassemble. I used a car engine hoist, so it was easy to lift and move.

The lower unit can stay on, In my case I removed mine as I did water pump, lower mounts and a general refinish of unit.

Factory manuals give the most info, ebay has the listed for most years and models.

Thanks Paw.. we need to talk about those mounts..soon

I'll chase down this OEM book..and we shall see what it unveils...I'm tempted to take the lower of for just the same reason..a new pump and such..

Thanks again for all the help~!
