1986 Evinrude 225 alarm warning and power loss

I have a 1987 Evinrude 225 EFI that has recentlly been rebuilt. At start the engine runs great if you run it almost wide open across the lake it runs fine,, but if you let it idle or shut it down so you can fish, problems start. When you go to attempt to take off from here the engine boggs down and sometimes dies. Also the alarm warning goes off when almost full throttle. I just had the component in the oil tank replaced, but it still has a warning going on. Is there a insufficient fuel supply or something. Ahoy Mitch....welcome to iboats.....<br /><br />We need to clarrify a couple things. In your Post title you said "1986 225hp" and in your post body you post "1987 225 EFI". Well.....back in '86 and '87, EFI was just a wet dream for a bunch of outboard jocks. Could you clarify the year or just post the model number?<br /><br />Thanks.

They have a heat sensor that tells the power pack , that the engine is over heating which slows the engine down and make the warning horn go on.There is a possibility that it is bad or the pack is bad.You can disconnect the wires to sensors and try that.If that works then the sensor is bad or the enging is not cooling right.If that does not change it the pack could be acting up and need replacing.

The E/J's didnt have SLOW until 1988. Its most likely a fuel pressure problem but lets see if he will post the model number so we can tell what he has.<br /><br />You mentioned it has just been rebuilt. Why? What was the cause and has it been corrected?

Dhadley,,<br />It was rebuilt because of scortched pistons and was missing cylinders and ran like crap. It was honed out replaced pistons and all that good stuff. The power packs were replaced also.<br />its a 1986 225 Evinrude , sorry for the confusion.<br />I will get the model number as soon as possible also. Causes of the powerhead needing replaced..<br />There was a bearing where the powerhead rests onthe rest of the lower engine, that failed and was basicly worn to shreads.. This was caused by a failed seal and bolt missing where it holds it on. There the oil was leaking out and causing water to come inside the engine. This is what the mechanic told us and showed me... i hope this also helps any of your ideas.<br />mitch

are you pre-mixing or using vro?<br />have you retorqued the heads?<br />Dhadley asked above about posting your model #, do you know what it is?

2k Boat.<br />I am using VRO. I am still lookin for the model number for this machine. I haven't tried retorquing the heads on it. I am out in wyoming and with this machine, where it was rebuilt. I took it to montana at a lower elevation, with the has tank filled all the way up and never had the alarm come on. came back to wyoming with lower fuel volumes in the tank and it alarm goes off. I am gonna find that model number for ya.. Does any of these facts help. Also my friend said something about the fuel line coupler..<br />thanks<br />Mitch

I found the Model number..<br />it is E225TXCD and the serial number is Gll46228 .<br />So i hope you doctors can figure this engine out, as it is driving me crazy. Seems like it is just something small, like an O2 sensor.<br />thanks<br />mitch

hello<br /> rule out overheat first. but if it started after changing a fuel filter then look to see if your engine has a fuel restriction alarm. it will be attached to the main fuel inlet line with a tee fitting on the suction side of the vro pump assy. use a vacum tester to test the switch it should not close till 6 or 7 inches of mercury. also test the fuel system vacum. it should be 4 inches or less at wot.<br /> the fuel restriction and overheat are the same alarm tone.<br /> good luck and keep posting

Well Mitch....I think rodbolt is on the right track. A continuous tone means fuel restriction (if the engine is not overheating). With the engine bogging down, I'd go with rodbolts post and start looking for fuel restriction. Don't always have to be on the engine...also check the feed from the tank also. It's easy to kink a hose in the close quarters of the engine.<br /><br />Keep us posted.
