I have a 1986 bayliner with a Force 125 outboard today i went to test it for the seasion

we started out good it seemed to have a bit of vidration but once it toped out at 35 it seemed smoth
after about 10 min at 35 mph it just stoped motor was still running RPM where
at about 3000 and started to climb so i shut it down.
after checking the prop i started it again
when i engaged the gas the RPM would get up almost to 5000
but speed was like 5 mph
It would not get back up to top speed so i limped to dock and came here to ask if any one can tell me what might be wrong

it starts it sounds good just no speed

Re: 1986 FORCE 125 Question

There is a good chance that you spun your prop hub. The easiest check for this is to put the engine in gear (with it off and on a trailer) and grab the prop blades and try to turn the prop. If you can do it then you need to have the prop reworked or buy a new one.

If you can't move the prop, then you might have lower gearbox issues.

Check back after trying to turn the prop.

Re: 1986 FORCE 125 Question

Take off the prop and check the hub where the thrust washer plugs into it. If there are rub marks, for sure the hub is spun. If there are spin marks inside the thrust washer where the taper contacts the shaft, the prop rubber hub is spun. Otherwise, mark the hub and the rubber hub insert with a magic Marker and reinstall the thrust washer and prop. Run it til the problem happens. If the marks have shifted and are no longer aligned, then for sure the rubber hub is spun and needs to be replaced. Any boat dealer will send it to a prop shop for you.

Re: 1986 FORCE 125 Question

Take it off and take it to West Marine or any boat dealer near you and have it sent out to get overhauled. I had mine sent out via West Marine's program and got back a new looking prop and it didn't cost that much.
