I have a force 85 on my bayliner and I am not getting spark on any cylinder. Here's what I have done to test so far:

1. Replaced all 3 coil packs. (They looked bad on visual inspection)

2. Replaced rectifier. (Pins were bent and it looked a bit shabby)

3. Tested stator. (800 ohms across the leads)

4. Replaced kill switch and lanyard. (The clip on the lanyard was broken and the switch looked weathered)

5. Inspected the spark plugs. (All brand new from previous owner. Not a spot of grime on them)

6. New Battery. (650 CCA From West Marine)

7. Purchased a Clymer's manual. (Probably the best investment to date)

8. New Starter.

9. Inspected and replaced any "Questionable" wiring. (Anything that looked like it was not in top shape got replaced.

So basically as you can see I have tried to figure this out on my own but I need some help. Anyone that could assist would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bry

Update...

I think the issue might be the ignition switch. The key is stuck in the switch and will not come out. I have ordered a replacement switch from boatfix and it should be here in a few days. Once it comes and I install it I will update the thread. Any other helpful tips would be appreciated.

Repaced the ignition switch and still no go. I could really use some help here. I picked up a complete ignition from ebay for $100.00 but am not sure what to replace first. One weird thing that I have noticed is that on other 85hp motors they have a terminal block that all of the ignition wires are connected to that is attached to the same panel that the CD boxes and coils mount to. Mine does not have this terminal block. All of the wires go directly to the component that they are supposed to connect to. I don't see the mounting holes on the bottom of the ignition plate as they exist on other motors I have seen. Is this just a difference in design or am I missing something?

To recap, my questions are these:

1. Which component should I replace first? (Stator/Trigger is my thought)

2. How can I test these components to locate the failure? (I have the Clymer's manual and have tested the stator by impedance 800 ohms not sure how to test the trigger)

3. Should I be concerned about the wire routing?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: 1986 Force 85 no spark on any cylinder

I recently had the same problem. I started by removing the fly wheel to clean the coils on the stator. When I removed the stator I discovered the real problem. There is a magnet which is glued to the inside of the fly wheel. This circular magnet is not suppose to be able to move freely inside the fly wheel. If it does no ac voltage will be generated. Once I secured the magnet back onto the fly wheel with JB Weld, I had plenty of spark. Check it out.
