I have a 1986 four winns that has a sticking stearing problem. It only does it when at idle. I checked the power stearing fluid level and it is good, checked the belts and they are in place and tight. Put some greese under the stearing wheel console. Any other sugestions or ideas? Thanks.

OMC Cobra drive?? If so,there is a grease fitting mounted on the steering ram on the transom plate, this should be greased and OMC triple guard grease should be put on the rod that goes into the steering ram. This is way in the back of the engine compartment, on the left side as you face it, just behind and to the left of the engine. You will need a grease gun that is small and has a flex hose to get in there.
If you have a Mercrusier I think the set up is similar.

Are all OMC drives Cobra? I know for sure it is an OMC drive. I will check the steering ram. Is the transom plate under the steering wheel and guages? Thanks!!

Only if you're having a very bad day..... :D

The Transom Plate is attached to the back of the boat where the engine goes through the hull, also known as the transom. There should be a steering arm that comes through this assembly, to which the hydraulic arm is attached.

All OMC drives are NOT cobra, but I think your 1986 should be. Not certain for sure......

Thanks for straighting me out on that, Steve! You probably can tell I spent 10 years in the US Army instead of the US Navy. Thanks again. I will look at the rear of the boat behind the engine.

While I was messing around with the water leak problem I saw the grease fittings at the transom plate. Put some grease in, they looked pretty full, did not take long for grease to come out. ****What I did notice was where the steering cable goes in coming from the front of the boat moved freely. Is this normal? I mean if you put you hand on the cable part and moved it up and down it moved with little resistance. Thanks!!!
