Hello everyone,

This is my first post and look forward to many more! I am in the process of replacing a 1988 125HP Force outboard (thankfully.) I am interested in a 1986 140HP V4 motor. I know next to nothing about these motors. Does anyone have any idea where to get specs, etc? What kind of reputation do they have? Are they really 140hp? The Force was not really 125HP.

Thanks for your time!

Justin

jd - Those 140s are excellent motors. I had a 79 & couldn't break it. Suggest that you get the OMC service and parts manual. You will save the cost of the manual on you first service.

The 1986 140 was a 3.500" (standard bore) V4 looper. It proved to be a very reliable and powerful motor. The "small bore" V4 loopers were produced from 1985 to 87. In 1988 the standard bore was increased to 3.685". At some point your "small bore" powerhead may have been replaced with a "large bore" powerhead.

Look at the top of the cylinder head. There is a tab on the head gasket sticking up between the head and the block. Is the tab straight across or is there a cut out area?

I am going to look at the motor on Friday, the dealer wants $2700 installed with all the controls. Supposedly the motor is in great shape with low hours (aren't they all?) I will check the power head then. If the motor is in good shape is this a fair price?

Unless this is a "Like new engine", It seems a bit steep to me! Id be more comfortable at $2000.00) Have you haggled with him yet? Offer $2000.00 installed! It is the end of the season!!! and yes, these older V4s were rock solid!

Email me for more information at, rays-shop1@juno.com

LubeDude
