1986 Johnson 25 hp tiller question

I am wondering how to remove the tiller handle. The two gears that mesh aren't lining up. Its like a spring broke on the inside. I removed the bolt but I still cant remove the handle. Any advice would be great.

1984 model.----Take the throttle grip off first.----More screws will be found.

I just saw that. "bangs head against the wall". thanks for the heads up. Now I just broke the starter rope. I am ready to throw the towel in. Any advice besides get a new motor?
