am rebuilding 1986 Johnson 60, 3 cyl<br /><br />all 3 carbs identical ID:<br /><br />carbs metal tags are 398311<br /> 26 C L<br /><br />carb ink-stamped number is 82296 (last digit might be 0)<br /><br />as the combustion chamber and pistons are very light gray, I was told the engine may have been too lean, so try to get richer.<br /><br />How? Are different size jets available? Where? All I can find is rebuild kits which seem to be just gaskets, needles, and floats.<br /><br />Thanks for advice, Harvey

Why are you rebuilding it?<br /><br />What spark plugs are you running? What octane fuel?<br /><br />Jets are listed in the front of the OE service manual. Any John/Evin dealer can order them if they don't stock them.

blown wrist pin circlip middle cylinder- see picture<br /> <br /><br />stock champion QL77JC4 and 87 pump gas (manual calls for 86)<br /><br />No, my original Evinrude/ Johnson Service Manual 507547 does not list any jets, either in section 1 specifications, or section 2 fuel. Only info is under calibration as "fixed low and high speeds"<br /><br />Yes, a dealer might order, but a little homework first is prudent. Thanks for any help

Sorry, yes, I overlooked it-Carb orifice plug chart.<br /><br />Once I identify existing size jet, any general tips on increasing to next size? Looks like mostly .001 inch increments. Is it worthwhile to change this little bit or should I go for two steps at a time? Have no experience here, so I appreciate the practical, hands-on advice. <br /><br />In cars, an air/fuel ratio measurement makes it easy to fine tune carburetion. Any such method for 2 cycle? Just go by seat of pants and look at spark plug colors? I do not have exhaust gas temperature.

you can actually use a wire drill to increase the size. once you get where ya need to be you can order them new for the size you need. its not at all uncommon to have to "adjust" the fixed jetting. I recebtly rebuilt a 98 ii5 crossflow. the original owner and a local marina never could make it idle correctly. after I put 4 .030 pistons, bearings, reeds and such what nots I finnaly started playing with idle air jets. it got a bit better but in the end I had to open the pickup tubes from .03 to .o4 and rejet the air bleeds to .038. I ran it from kitty hawk to wanchese yesterday, about 30 miles, and it runs flawless. to bad I sold it saturday. the man offered me more than I could turn away :) . but on your carbs you can play with the jets both fuel and idle air with a wire drill set. I usually make it in .003 or .005" jumps. with careful playing you will be amazed how smooth that motor can actually run.
