I was just looking at buying a 9.9hp Johnson outboard from an individual. Anybody know if there is somewhere I can download the origional manual for the motor online? Also The stop button on the motor (the one next to the pull cord). Would the stop button on the throttle suffice?

Thanks!

P.S. Btw Im a newbe to the form!

Model number?

The manual is copyrighted. Reprints can be bought from kencook.com and others.

Good luck, and welcome aboard. :)

I have an '88, for that vintage there is no stop button next to the pull cord, only the slow speed adjust knob (OMC's term for it) and the choke knob. The only stop button is the one on the end of the steering handle where the lanyard clips on.

Ignore the 100:1 fuel mix sticker on the side near the fuel line connector. In the early 90's OMC changed the recommendation for the '85 to '89 models from their original 100:1 back to 50:1.
JB is correct re: the operators manual, unless you manage to stumble across one on eBay.

While you're at it pick up an OEM service manual as well. From a maintenance standpoint the operators manual offers fairly little other than pointing out where all the grease and lubrication points are.

Re: 1986 Johnson 9.9 manal? and quick question!

If OMC changed the mixture from 100:1 to 50:1 then I need to find out what year my engine is. I just purchased a sailboat and it has a Johnson 9.9 and the owner told me he thought it was an early 90's but the only Johnson dealer here in Hawaii told me it was a 1987 model. The model number is J10RLCUE with a serial number of E6224305. I didn't have any faith in him (until I read the previous post) because the engine is stamped 100:1 but he told me it was 50:1 and to use XD30 oil in it. Can anyone tell me for sure what year my engine is?
It looks like the dealer dropped the E and used CU to come up with 1987. Thank you for your time.

Tony

Hi Tony,

The dealer's right about the year of your motor.

The 50:1 recommendation really applies to all 9.9's. 100:1 was found to be too 'lean' in some running applications. 50:1 will do no harm whatever year your 9.9 is.
