1986 johnson 90 hp

the starter cranks the motor very slow. It used to start the motor slow cranking then finally turning it fast enough to start. Has gotten worse and now won't crank motor and bendix won't come up into the flywheel. I checked all conections and used jumper cables to bypass power wires to rule out wire corrosion. The battery is a new marine. took starter apart and cleaned copper connections on bottom. ant this point I'm ready to buy a new/rebuilt starter for $85 ish on ebay. anyone have any other ideas?"?

or take yours to a starter/alternator shop for rebuild.

First, replace the battery cables, or at least bypass them with jumpers to be sure that they are not the problem.

I bypassed the the cables with jumpers and still get the same thing. the bendix will not come up into the flywheel just spins! the battery is good!

The starter is something i can bring to an auto store to have tested?

Metropolitan areas have shops that rebuild starters for automobiles and they can easily rebuild your outboard starter.

is this going to be cheaper than getting a new one at the toon of $85 do you know?

Local labor rates determine the cost, but the shops are well aware that they compete with new products.

Be sure that the starter pinion and shaft are not greased; It should have minimal very light oil and be very clean.

When you used the jumpers, did you go directly to the starter and bypass the solenoid?

Now that I think of it I may not have bypassed the silanoid. I hooked the jumpers to the neg post on the starter and the pos on the silanoid. Now that the starter is out can i just bring it to the auto store to have it tested?

Starter shops are usually specialists that rebuild, but check what's in your area.
