I have a 16 ft bassboat with a 1986 90hp VRO outboard.

Serial # J6120946
Model # J90TJCOS

I just purchased this boat (knowing the motor needed some work) and I am not hugely mechanically inclined. When I first got it, the starter would not work, and I replaced the solenoid. This worked and got it started. I also replaced the spark plugs.

I took it to the lake. It started fine, and idled fine. There is virtualy no power when applying the throttle. The motor sounds fine. 12mph is about all it would do. After running for about 5 minutes an alarm went off in the throttle control box area. I am assuming this is some sort of overheat alarm. It was a non stop, steady alarm.

Any suggestions on what I should do next. If I can do it myself I will sure try, but if necessary I will pay to get it fixed. I am hoping to have this boat running good by March, hopefully for under $1,000.

Thanks
Tyndyn
