My buddy has a 1986 mariner 135,it was very badly abused by previous owner. We fixed the tilt trim problem, installed an impeller, fixed the linkage for the reverse,Steering is almost controlable, but there is a real problem with the oil injection. If we disconnect the injection system,is there anything that we have to worry about,I mean if we just use the right amount of oil mixed with the gas in the tank.I mean as far as lubricateing something else that should be.We have a bass tourney coming up and have been working on this boat every weekend.Just wondering. Thanks for your help.

Why are you disconnecting the oil injection?.. Those engine have one of the best injection systems in the industry....

Well, how can you tell if the thing is working right.Seems to me that the motor smokes to high hell, sparkplugs get fouled quickly, probably needs adjusting or something, but nothing on the boat worked before,no alarms go off,we got a manuel and there is'nt a whole lot in there about that. All the marine shops out here think that everything on that motor is made of solid gold.Really it is new to us,and the only way out is to spend 110.00 dollars an hour to find out.All of our money went into the boat.I don't know

The Merc service manual has an entire section devoted to just the injection system... All the setup, everything... If there is a lot of smoke, what brand of oil are you using?

That injector pump is a variable rate pump. There is linkage to it from the throttle linkage. If that is disconnected, or mis-adjusted, it could be idling with way too much oil, causing problems.

Another problem they sometimes have is the air supply valve, or check valve it is called is supposed to releive pressure on the oil system when the engine is shut off. If it doesn't, it forces extra oil into the fuel lines, causing problems.

Both problems are very easily and inexpensively fixed.

Get the book for the engine.

hope it helps
John
