Hi ALL, just replaced my 1985 50HP Evinrude no tilt/trim with a 1986 60HP Mariner with tilt/trim. I was going to get the '93 90hp Johnson but I followed JB's advice which is a very good one. Anyway, the water coming out of the tell tale hole is scorching hot. after a while in the lake the motor refused to go anywhere. It starts and idles but when I put it in gear it dies. While its idling I took the bonnet off and touch the engine to see if there's any place in the engine that's hot... None at all. Except for the lower unit, even while its in the water it's super warm.. Don't know anything about motor at all... I only replaced my Evinrude for this one because of the Tilt and trim... I have a minor back problem that I don't want to aggrevate anymore.. thanks for all the help.....

Re: 1986 Mariner 60HP Outboard problem

Most outboards send the exaust down the leg, so what u have is an exaust pipe, in a sheath, under water. Hence, it should be hot.
Since you just got this motor tho, check it out thouroughly before going out again. Do this just because you just got it,and don't know what was done before you got it.

Run a compression test.
Drain and (if no water),refill the lower unit. Inspect for chunks of metal in the old lube.Be sure to use new gaskets on the vent and fill screws.

Remove thermostat, and test it. Run the engine a few minutes without the tstat to flush out the block, and re-install the tstat. Dont leave it out.

Lastly, take some decarb cleaner, and run it thru the engine. If the exaust ports are restricted, this may help, without tearing it down.

Thanks 12Footer, I did have the lower unit torn down and found pieces of impeller inside. I'm in the process of acquiring a new impeller right now. I have the compression check before tearing the lower unit. All three cylinders reads 130 psi.

Where will a thermostat be? What does it look like? Is it anything like a car thermostat? Thanks.... a lot....
