1986 Merc 115 water temp gauge?

just got a nice 1986 115hp Merc inline 6 with about 130psi on each cold. I am wondering if I can install a water temp sending unit in that motor so I can have a gauge or a horn or something that will warn me of impeller failure. There is a brass plug in the head near one of the spark plugs, can this be removed and a sending unit installed in it's place? What is better a horn/buzzer or a gauge on my dash?

You might want to install a pressure gauge instead of a temperature gauge since a failing impeller can still keep it cool. I run a pessure gauge with mine and I can read more from it than the temperature gauge. Just something to think about.
