I just bought a boat with 1986 135 Merc. Just wondering if this motor has a history of any problems that I shoud be aware of? I've heard some say that the oil injection should be bypassed. Anyone agree? How can the overheat warning horn be tested? I don't remember hearing it the time i started it. Another Merc I had the horn tested everytime the key was switched on.
This motor came with 2 props. I think one is a 19 pitch & other 23. I"m I correct that the 23 would give more speed? Thanks

The oil alert module has a power on self test sequence that puts out about 5 beeps. If you don't hear it, you have no alarm system. Could be as simple as the wire from the engine to the beeper is bad, but without a horn, you have no alarm.

The oiling system gets unreliable if yer turning over 6500 rpm, or if you drastically overheat. The Archilese heel is the plastic gear on the crankshaft.
I think it is a bit more reliable than a brother in law, or teenage son remembering to properly mix oil with the gas.

I run a VRO that's 20 years old, with about an ounce of oil per gallon of fuel in the main tank for insurance, and I verify the POST beeps every time I start up.

hope it helps
