1986 Merc 25 Which way do the oil seals go

On the crankshaft, upper and lower oil seals. Took mind apart and the upper seal was metal out and the lower seal the rubber and spring ring were out or should I say exposed. The manual isn't clear on this. Can anybody help.

Hey Jaybird.<br />The flat (or solid) side of the seal goes into the seat . The notched or slit side faces out.

Thanks 12 Footer,<br /><br />By-the-way, I was looking at Merc's new "Parts Express" site and on the microfish I noticed a part for this engine that isn't shown in my manual. It is a sleve that fits over the lower crank shaft and then the oil seal slides over it. One came in my gasket kit ,but, there wasn't one on the shaft when I disassembled it. Know anything about it?
