I have a 1986 Rinker with a 4.3L OMC Cobra...

Last summer the engine started developed a hesitation. I assumed it was a carb problem and we'd get it rebuilt before we used the boat this season.

Boat guy just called. He just got around to getting the boat out of storage. The hesitation was #1 cylinder missing. It had 0 compression and the plug was destroyed. All other cylinders had compression greater that 175.

Any ideas what happened?

The real bad news is that last Spring we replaced the lower unit with a rebuilt lower unit. That was about $2k.

Other than #1 cyclinder the boat is in good shape.

Any advice?

Could be a stuck valve. Pull the valve cover and turn the engine over by hand and watch valve movement.

If the plug was destroyed, I would think there is a hole in the piston.
