1986 Sea Ray 250 Sundancer

well may have finally found my boat. looked at it yesterday. taking it out for a test run tuesday. its a 1986 Sea Ray Sundancer 250. original owner is selling cause he downsized after his kids grew up. it has about 600 hours and the engine (5.7 mercruiser) has never been touched. the gimbel bearing and water pump was replaced a couple years ago. boat is in very good condition aesthetically. it has a custom built tri axle trailer with 7 new tires (spare included). he is also throwing in the 2 5/16 load stabilizer hitch insert. there are no electronics other than AM/FM/CD player. it looks to be very well taken care of. it has an antenna for a 2 way radio but he must have kept the radio for his other boat. he used it primarily on lake erie. comes with 3 props and all covers. he will include some life vests and fenders. if all works out i will likely be bringing it home tuesday night. he said it weighs about 6500lbs and he is guessing 1500 for the trailer. it also only has 1 battery. it is a regular car battery. i will need to get another but he is saying to just get another car battery?

if it works out i will post pics after i get it. asking price is $9000. thoughts???

I have an 87 250 Sea Ray Cuddy/Fisherman and absolutely love it. Mine also was well cared for by the original owner. She is a tank that easily handles 3' seas offshore fishing. Rides very well and tops out at about 39 mph with a considerable load. Mines not a Sundancer, but it is very well built and solid.

good to hear. calling marinas today. the one i wanted will not pro rate. their season is 5 months and we are 1/3 through it. i heard different costs from a few members but get a different answer from the owner. seems not willing to budge on the pro-rate issue. they are already the most expensive marina on the river. may be going to look at a different marina today.

I trailer for the most part. If I am not working and weather is nice, I rent a transient slip over weekends and launch Friday after work, leave it at the marina and enjoy it for the weekend and back on trailer Sunday evening.

the only real concerns so far for me are some gouges (more like the vee just got a little scraped) in the front bottom that he said was from beaching. he said there are no leaks though. it isn't bad but is noticeable. there are also a few spots along the sides below the water line that he 'touched up'. he said he used bottom paint. other than that the bottom looks original. never painted. i was figuring after this season maybe i would go ahead and paint the whole bottom. he also said it sat all last season and hasn't been started since the end of the 2013 season but was all winterized.

Check out the used boat buyer checklist at the top of the page. Remember boats of this vintage rot from the bottom up. Seriously consider paying a couple hundred bucks to have a surveyor look her over for you and a test run on the water.

thanks for the info. the owner said the gimbal bearing and impeller were replaced a couple years ago. i am going to ask for paperwork/receipts for these repairs but would it be likely the bellows were replaced at this time?
