Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

Woo hoo is right Tink. I was starting to think I screwed up the new transom or and was not going to be able to align the engine.

Sitting in AAA right now renewing the registration. Got the drive back on about an hour ago. One more trip to Home Depot (which makes about 500 trips for this project) and a couple hours more work connecting electrical and resinstalling the trim and upholstery should do it. Plan is now to be on the water on the morning.

Holy SH@#, Where's the Tylenol?

Holy SH@#, Where's the Tylenol?

I must be the poster child for doing everything backwards. Backed the boat in this morning -- but did not launch before I checked for leaks (learned from last time). Of course, I heard the sickening sound of running water -- FAIL! A nice steady stream coming right in where the shift cable goes through the transom plate. I didn't choose not to do the bellows. I just didn't even think about it.

Maybe someone could take this thread and highlight all the stupid mistakes and oversights. It might help the next dumb ***** who wants to do everything in the wrong order. Honest, I am not mentally challenged, it just seems that way when I am around boats.

Oh well, back to the drawing board. I will do all three bellows at once and see if I can't get back out there by next weekend (July 11). I could probably get it done in time for this weekend, but the kids are getting tired of waiting for this thing to be done. Taking the family to Universal Studios and Disneyland this weekend instead having them wait for my next screw-up.

I am so sorry to hear about the bad news, but look on the bright side, NO MORE GRINDING AND WAITING FOR THINGS TO CURE :D

This can be fixed relatively quick with the correct tools.

Maybe we can celebrate a simulataneous launch, only distance would seperate us.

Have fun this weekend regardless. remember its not about quanity (well maybe) but quality of the time to be spent with loved ones. Next launch will be of quality.

Sail on.....tink

Thanks Tink.

Just got back from our amusement park hopping. We had a great time!

Since the boat shops are closed for the weekend, I will not get to complete the bellows replacement until later in the week. However, I was hoping to at least tear it down today or tomorrow. I noticed that I will need 2 tools - hinge pin tool and shift cable nut tool. Are there any substitutes for these tools? I don't have either one of these and as I mentioned, the boat shops are closed.

Did some research and found that many of the experts here use a 1/2" allen wrench for the hinge pin tool.

Still looking for a substitute for the Drive Unit Shift Cable Removal and Installation Tool (91-12037).

Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

Got all the bellows and the water hose off.

Used a 1/2" hex head that fit on my 1/2" socket wrench to get the hinge pins out. With a 2 foot bar for leverage, they came out pretty easy.

Got the shift cable nut off with a 9/16 deep socket (1/2").

Going to buy the bellows, hose, and new gaskets tomorrow. Hope to get everything together after work. I know it will be way harder to get it together than it was taking it apart.

Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

Got the new bellows and water tube on. Wow, that was extremely difficult. The exhaust tube was super easy and the shift cable bellows was not much harder. However, the water hose and u-joint bellows gave me fits.

I think I let the adhesive dry too long on the bellows and could not get it all the way on the transom side. After I wrestled with it for a while, I pulled it off and put a fresh coat of adhesive and put it back on with the adhesive still wet. It slipped right on. I let it dry for a little while then tightened the clamp.

For the shift cable bellows, I installed the cable on the bell housing and slid the bellows up to where the old one was. Then I slid the cable through the transom and installed the hose and bellows.

Drive is back on... again. Ready to go...again. I will try to get out in the next couple days. Hopefully this will do it. I will post a splash video as soon as I am confirmed leak free.

Wish me luck!

Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

Best of luck SD... this has been a great thread for me to watch. My boat is 'tired' structurally and I will be following your project for years to come as I eventually decide to do the same thing. In the meantime I tackled the front cam seals and installed a new upper motor mount (now I need to re-align it again). I did the bellows, senders, bearing, and shift cable thing last season and can appreciate your frustration levels. REALLY hope your sea trial goes as planned... let us know!! To make you feel better , I'll show you a pic of my motor at the moment. Be thankful you are closer than me at splashing it.

SPLASH!!!!!

Took her around Oceanside Harbor for about an hour. Then when I confirmed we had no leaks and the motor was purring, took about a mile off shore and down the coast a bit. I will mostly use it in closed water, but the harbor is only a few miles from my house.

I love this boat! She is very solid, runs and handles great, and I know she will last a long time.

THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP AND SUPPORT!!!!

Re: Splash!!!

I am very happy for you. You should be very proud of your accomplishments. Enjoy the boat. Looks like you had a great time, even thoug it was a little rough.

I'm hoping to splash mine within a couple weeks. problem is I still have some glass work to finish up.

Re: Splash!!!

Thanks Guys, I can't believe it is finally done. What a great feeling. I don't know if it is because the project took 16 months and a lot of hard work or if it is just that this is a solid little boat, but I already like this boat much better than my 2005 Bayliner 185 3.0 (which I liked a lot).

I will likely be back here this winter. I was paranoid about the water that splashed in yesterday and soaked the carpet (water was pretty rough). I think I will tear out the carpet on the deck and put in duraback, rhino lining, or gel when the season is over. Until then, I am going to use the heck out of this thing.

Keep at it Tink! You are almost there.

Re: Splash!!!

Snap-in (removable) carpet may be a good alternative. Looks great, and sounds great! Congrats. I'm hoping to hit the water this weekend in mine, had the motor running tonight. Fingers crossed. ;)

Re: Splash!!!

Out again today. This thing really runs and handles well. A couple trips from the beach to the dock we had 8 people on board and she still ran great. 35mph with 8 people was no problem. That was certainly not the case with my newer 3.0.

Here are a couple pics from when we started to set up camp for the day.

Re: Splash!!!

Looks amazing SD...congrats! I hit the water today as well, first time this season. I promised months ago to show a pic of my doghouse cover.... just so happened to take a pic today. Certainly not as nice as yours!

Happy camping!
