Re: Splash!!!

I followed this thread from beginning to end, GOOD JOB! I would LOVE to see pictures though! None of them seem to be working. I believe we have the same boat, and would LOVE to see what you have done! Oh and PS the "diary" post was a riot, I was dying at my desk! I think my fiance feels the same way! lol! My Seville needs just a little love, the motor has been rebuilt top to bottom, as also has the outdrive. Next year shes getting the alternator conversion and a dual battery setup. So far she has all new carpet just installed, I built new seats for either side of the engine, redid the blower system, and am in the process of installing a new stereo, and re doing ALL the vinyl walls, cushions, etc in pure white(hate two tones or tri tones for that matter)! Which brings me to my next question... what is the best way to go about rebuilding the bow cushions? The rear cushions were easy because it was just like re doing a dining room chair since they were square and had mdf to staple to, although I went with 5" foam (wicked comfy!). The walls will be even easier I assume though pricey(that foam ain't cheap!). But the bow cushions stump me! I don't even know where to begin! Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a million!

Re: Splash!!!

Hey Sevillity,

I brought my old seat cushion (including the bow) and dog house covers to a great seamstress. She made new covers from patterns she made form the old stuff. I only paid $190 for the labor and $133 for the vinyl (Joann's). Upholstery shops wanted $1500+ to do the same thing.

If you are going with one solid color, doing them yourself should not be too bad. Here is a link from a guy who did his own and they look great. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=347724&highlight=upholstery

Nice to read that you splashed. Sorry that I have been away for awhile. Sometimes my work steals me away from life and I miss out on the fun. So to update you I will be back to working on the Sea Ray after labor day once I finish my current job contract. I intend to finish her this fall and do the formal splash about thanksgiving week end. Still have not finished the engine cover and deck the way I want it but I have had time to rethink things out and I have some fresh ideas to try. So Happy wave dancing to you and I will update my post real soon

Thanks! That guy did an awesome job! It may be some time before I get around to upholstery of all things though...boat is in the shop... major problems :( Need a valve job(broken valve guide), and water in cylinder number four too, thinking its just the elbow(hoping) since i have an aluminum exhaust mani. this is gonna be pricey... oh yeah need new bellows too  ugh, maybe ill get back out there before the leaves change.... heres hoping...

Re: Splash!!!

Sorry to hear about the engine problems. Any quotes on what it might cost to fix?

The bellows are a pain, but are definitely doable if you choose to do them yourself.

Hey LR, great to hear from you!! Sorry you have been too busy to finish the Ray, but is nice to hear it was work getting in the way, especially in this economy. I hope you have at least had the time to take the Renken out this summer?

Re: Splash!!!

SD,
Yes having the other boat helps and it was great until the heat. now with today 45 days 100 degrees or more and the lake levels low have not been out July or Aug. Plan on forcing the issue on Labor day weekend and spend the time fishing and boating best we can.
Maybe Just maybe it will cool down a bit, rain a little and make for a nice weekend.

Later

Re: Splash!!!

Another beautiful day on the lagoon! There are no lakes real close, but there is a decent little lagoon about 4 miles from my house.

Here we are towing my 10 year old son and a couple friends on our huge tube (more like a floating couch).

We are having a great summer on our new old boat.

Hey AMD, great to hear from you. No, haven't had it out yet. Too busy with work and little league. Baseball just ended last week, so I will be changing fluids and impellor ASAP and getting back on the water. How about you?

SD,
Likewise I have yet to have it in the water this season. Been chasing electrical gremlins... new Pertronix and repaired starter, finally have spark and ignition. Hopefully I'll get the drive ready to go and installed this weekend and may just be on the water for father's day... we'll see. There's always hope.

Hope you continue to post about your boating experiences. Love the videos, and its always great to see (and hear) other similar boats on the water.

Good luck, and safe boating!

Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

It is almost time for my (my boat's) annual Vaseline treatment. This year, I thought I would experiment with the "traditional/correct" method before I cop out and spend 30 minutes with the V making her beautiful and shiny again.

My plan is:
Wet sand with 1000 grit
cutting compound
polishing compound (Finesse-It)
wax

I am planning to sand by hand. My question here is - how do I know if I have sanded off all of the oxidation? I will be wet sanding and you really can't see the oxidation when it is wet.

I plan to use my father's day present for the cutting, polishing, and waxing - http://www.harborfreight.com/power-tools/polishers/7-inch-variable-speed-polisher-sander-92623.html. Is this the right tool?

I am perfectly happy with how a thorough Vaseline job and a coat of wax makes my boat pretty again. However, the results scca vette and iqxoqlms had in this thread are simply incredible - http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=2722180&posted=1#post2722180. It will cost me about $100 for the chemicals compared to the $1.99 for the Vaseline, but it will be worth it if I can get it right.

Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

I was *just* outside doing this to my 88 Sea Ray... I started with 1000 grit wet sanding, and quickly found it was wearing me out too much, but it was the easiest way to get the heavy oxidation off.

I wouldn't worry about making sure to get all the oxidation off with the 1000 grit - just go over it all a few times, and then start in with the buffer. Your arms will thank you.

For the areas that were not oxidized too badly, I started off with the compound and buffer.

Still alot more to do, but got maybe 25% done in a couple hours. May work on it again Sunday. Tomorrow I'm hitting the water!

Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

SD,

I agree with Struc. That 7" polisher is the same tool I use, of similar quality. Just don't spin it up to full speed when polishing, and avoid or mask the trim and parts that you don't want damaged (chrome coated SeaRay logo for example). I'd skip the wet sanding (too much surface area to cover by hand) and only wet sand the worst areas if you feel it is a must-do. I'd probably try 2000 or 1500 to see if they do the job. 1000 will leave quite a few fine scratches to polish out. Definitely don't apply too much pressure with the sanding. Every hull will be different, depending on your climate and how much UV it has been exposed to.

For polish/restorer in my opinion you can't beat the 3m products. I've done a few boats and the stuff is a miracle in a bottle. Start with a heavy duty oxidation remover (heavy cut), followed by a traditional polish, then wax. I think you'll be pleased with the results.

No matter your method its a bear of a process, and very tiring on the arms & shoulders. I've only got half my boat done this year, so far. That means I'll have to make sure to drive by the beach area in a certain direction to make sure the good side is showing ...lol

Installed my drive tonight, fired it up and vacuumed the interior. Race you to the lake! hehe

Re: 1986 Sea Ray Seville Restoration

I'll try and take some pictures this weekend of each side of the boat, so you can see the difference. The contrast is pretty amazing.

For what it's worth, I didn't have any noticable fine scratches after wetsanding with 1000 grit. I didn't really go nuts with it either, though. I simply wanted to get off the worst oxidation, and let the rubbing compound take care of the rest.

I'm just using some cheap Turtle Wax rubbing compound, and it's doing OK cutting through the oxidation.

AMD: When I run out of this stuff, I'll look into getting some of that 3M stuff you're talking about. Where is the best place to buy it and what kind of costs?
