I would. I've never seen a gap like that.

Kind of freaked me out a bit when I took the aluminum molding off. Also, the whole transom is about an inch short of the hull on the starboard side. I'll get a picture later. I should be cutting and grinding right now. I guess I'm hoping someone will chime in with a miracle cure. Really it's just a tad warm out, so I thought I'd wait till it gets hot.

Also, should I fur out the top part of the transom behind the splashwell? Where all that pookie is. There may be about a .5" of glue on there. Seems to me that that should be tight since the motor bolts through there.

I'm getting ready to cut the transom out, but before I do, I would like conformation that even though the wood is solid, it is wet, so it needs to come out. It appears to be PT.

I wonder if the transom wasn't cut by a PO to accommodate a different motor?

No, I know him. It was a one owner, ordered from Skeeter. I asked him if he ever had any work done on it and he said "no."

I agree with EZ. You have gone this far, go ahead and build a new one. I t would suck to get the boat back together and then have to replace the transom in a year or two.

Keep up the good work!

I know, like I said, I'm just trying to fight that reality. I'll get to grinding on it later this afternoon. I have a plywood supplier lined up. Any suggestions for glass and resin supplies?

I have found that often times my local marine shop has the best price on epoxy resins. You might just call around and get a feel for prices. If you can buy locally you will save on shipping, unless the local price is way higher than online. Just a thought.

Took a day off yesterday to enjoy my birthday. Made a few skirf cuts on the starboard side of the transom to start the removal. kind of hard to see, but it wouldn't be long before all this would have been mush.

I should probably make a new post and make this a resto thread.
WestTexas, lookin' forward to the pictures.
Here's the last of the plywood, unless there is wood under the little square a few inches up from the drain holes.

Is there foam in the transom?

Also, how thick is the ply in your transom? From the photo it looks like it's 3 inches or more.

Foam behind the transom, in the corners.
Transom is 1 5/8'', or close to it. Hard to tell with the glass and resin on it, but that's pretty close.

Re: 1986 Skeeter Starfire 90 Resto.

There is wet wood in places I would think water can't get into. I don't know what caused the failure. Water wicking down some poorly resined glass? I was reading an oops! post in another thread where he talked about 'buff and scuff.' When do you use 'buff and scuff' vs. grinding all the way down to solid material. Earlier in this thread I posted a picture of 'milky' or loose glass. Does all this glass have to come out/off, or can I do my best to remove all the debris and go to town with new resin and glass, and stringers and transom too? And as for resin, I was talking to a composite salesman and he suggested I use poly resin instead of epoxy. I read the FAQ sticky about fiberglass. I planned on using epoxy, but now I'm more confused about resins.

Re: 1986 Skeeter Starfire 90 Resto.

On bad glass I removed the pieces that where peeling up everything else that is still attached the hull I left and will take my grinding wheel with 80 grit disc and grind everything down smooth, inspect any pieces that peeled up and cut them off as I find them.

as for epoxy vs polyester....Ill say this without ANOTHER long debate, Epoxy adherse best, its F'en Epoxy, so I would use it to adhere anything that needs a critical structural bond (stringers, transom, misc. wooden structure) then use polyester over the remainder of the area to be coverered. Of course prep of the glass before adding more glass is critical.
