Re: 1986 ss 201

Hey DJ, thanks for stopping by, this tanks was real nasty on the outside but the inside is real clean, so I just rinsed it out good, and will be installing a nice new spin on filter assembly.

Re: 1986 ss 201

I am thinking about using
1 3/4" aluminized exhaust tubing for the fill tube on the 201, have it bend to fit down the gunwall and under the floor, then just use 6" of rubber hose to connect to the tank and the filler.

I wonder how much the exhaust tubing route would cost. I just priced out the filler hose....ouch.......I think they are gold plated on the inside!!! Waiting to hear back from my local mech to see how much he can get it for.

OK, I'm out of time out now...

Well, given the two options you provided, I'd go for the batts on the deck at the transom for more deck space:)

There is a fellas on iboats running an Islander rebuild who had like 47 different batt options:facepalm: What a dork:rolleyes:

i love the exhaust tubing idea if you can get it in the right size. std fuel filler hose i.d. is 1.5". i looked at exhaust elbows through Summit, JCWhitleyogni, PAS, etc but didn't see any small enough diameter to work so i ended up with copper water pipe elbows for the tight radius bends on the Starchief bow tank filler (no, they're not within 6" of any aluminum!).

you might be able to find the right size by cannibalizing a crapped out exhaust on an older furrin car, from back before their engines were producing 80 hp/liter....think a mid to late 70s corolla or B210

B2 I have a piece of 1 3/4 exhaust tube in the garage and it fits the hose real nice. Most exhaust shops can bend up a fill pipe pretty quick, at least I could mind you I did it for over 20years:facepalm:

Re: 1986 ss 201

Question for you guys:

I want to remake my seat bases which will sit on top of the floor. I am thinking of using 5/4 deck boards for the framing. Do you think the PT in this case would be ok since it is not touching any of the aluminum?

Re: 1986 ss 201

Okay, so Lowes and Home Depot Don't carry Arauco Plywood even though they have info sheets all over the store on it. Lowes did some digging with their suppliers and it looks like it will be the better part of a year before they can get it. Apparently a fire destroyed the plant where it is made and they aren't producing any at this time. I then wore the numbers on my phone out calling everywhere just to find exterior plywood:facepalm:. I found 1 supplier in the area and they only have 10 sheets of 5/8" for $20 a sheet. The next option was 1/2" Marine Fir @ $65 a sheet. I think I am going to go with the 5/8" exterior. I also need to replace/ re-route the fuel filler hose. I think it has drooped under the floor somewhere. I can't seem to pump gas into it without it back splashing all over the place. All the lines and vents seem to be clear when I push air through them but not gravity fed gas:mad:.

i don't see a major problem with using PT for seat bases that will sit on top of wood decks. some copper could leach or wash down but it won't be enough in any one spot to cause you major corrosion problems unless you leave your bilge full of salt water. IMHO.

Re: 1986 ss 201

So I get to the plywood supplier and what they initially quoted me was $43.40 for 3/4" Arauco, $65.23 for 5/8" marine Fir, and $39.31 for 5/8" ACX wasn't exactly right. To me the 3/4 Arauco felt lighter then the 5/8 ACX and he also gave it to me for $37 a sheet so that's what I went with. Got home unloaded and started the demo. I have family coming in from out of town starting next week so I am going to have to do this in stages because they all want some time on the water. The bow area is the worst of it and actually crumbling so i am going to knock that and the fuel filler hose out this weekend. Still deciding on what to do about the seats, but it looks like Arauco plywood and 5/4 framing. I will be updating my thread with pics of the progress. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=567947

Hey tigger, you may want to keep posts like your last three in your thread as they have limited relevance to what Glen is up to, eh?

Cheers:)

Thanks Jason, we will, in 36 years of wedded bliss this will only be our second two weeker, once when the kids were young and had a blast, and now a quiet one.

Re: 1986 ss 201

Started to pour rain when we wanted to leave yesterday morning, so we decieded to stay home and leave today. I got to work on the boat for a day. I raised the center cross bulkheads up to flush with the tops of the stringers, then started on the fuel tank floor support. sorry but no pics till I get back.

B2 after looking at the filler hose again your are correct it is 1.5"id. 1.5"exhaust tube after it is bent tends to restrict flow. The muffler shop I worked at, we had the ability to shrink the ends of the tube to a smaller size, that is what I will do with the 1.75"tube to make it easier to fill.

More photos of the destruction.

dozer, nice boat!!! I also have a SL series, but in a 16ft version, and I absolutley love it!! The floor is quite rotted in mine, and I would like to take it out this winter and re-do it; everything else is in excellent condition, and Ii would like to re-use it, including the carpet! (not even a sign of mold or mildew, though stripping it off may tell differently) my question is, how do the side "pads" come off. I see you have the same square "buttons" as mine, and I want to remove them with minimal damage, so they can be put back on and still look "factory" and not all screwed up.

Enjoy your post, and keep up the pictures comming!!!!

WOW that all I can say about two weeks at the lake, only one cold rainy day the rest were in the 90's Caught all kinds of fish including the biggest perch I have ever caught. I don't know how many hours we spent on the lake but I only burned 12 gallons of gas, biy them 120s are great. It is going to take a month to read all the threads and catch up on the site.

Maine, the side panels on the 201 come off by turning the buttons and looking for a small hole in the vinyl there will be a phillips screw behind the hole. Then in the folds between the different colors of vynil there will be a couple more. Hope that helps. You may have trouble reusing your carpet, as the glue will more than likley pull the backing off.
