Re: 1986 Thundercraft Distributor??

Would the sheared off split pin ends be in the oil pan? Could they get back up into the motor or is their a screen on the oil pump intake? The split pin pieces that broke off to cause the gear to come off are small. Should I be concerned about it?

Thanks

I would change the oil at the very least and see if they come out with the oil. There is a screen on the pump and they couln't get sucked into the pump... but they could interfere with the rotating mass and cause some problems if they stay in the bottom. I don't know that I would pull the engine just to get them out, but maybe a big magnet at the bottom of the pan to keep them there if they don't get flushed out with the oil.

Re: 1986 Thundercraft Distributor??

Thanks for all the great info. I have run the boat over the past weekend & all is well. I will take your advice and use a magnet to draw the pieces to the drain plug. I'll use a screen to see if they come out. More than half of the split pin was left in the distributor shaft. Ends were sheared off from wear and tar I guess over the years.

Thanks again.
