1987 120 Evinrude, tach quit working

I have searched the threads on this and have followed the instructions with no fix. Not only does the tach not work, the needle wrapped around backwards to the 5k mark. I have replaced the tach, same problem. Replaced the rectifier this weekend, still does not work. What else could it be? :mad:

Purple=power gray = tach pulse black= ground. Pulse set to 6. All connections clean and tight. Hopefully one of the gurus will chime in with other ideas. Good luck
