Please note I am looking for a complete tilt & trim motor for my 1987 Bayliner Capri Boat.

The motor is a 1987 Chrysler Force 125 HP - Outboard with model ID # 1496.

My motor goes up and down fine. However, it does not stay up. My mechanic says that it is bypassing the pumps.

Is there anyway I can get around without buying another tilt & trim motor. If not do I have to purchase a Chrysler Force Tilt & trim or are they interchangable.

Finally, if I do have to purchase one do you know where I can find one used but in good condition. I already tried E-bay with no luck.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Re: 1987 125HP Chrysler Force Tilt & Trim Motor - Does not stay up

Welcome
I also have an '87 Force 125, I also had the falling motor sickness. I couldn't believe how aggrivating it was or how easy MINE was to fix. In the bottom of the T & T motor there is a quarter size plug that takes an allen wrench. When you take that out there is a rubber O ring on the threads and one in a recessed area near the end. In the end of the plug there is a needle valve. Wrap the end in a rag so you don't scar it up and pull the end off the plug with pliars. Then bend over and pick up the spring and needle that just flew across the room. There is supposed to be a tiny O ring around the nipple on the valve inside, mine was absent. I went to NAPA and bought the smallest one they had, put it all back together and refilled with 30 wt non-detergent oil and to my amazement the damn thing stayed up. First time since I bought the boat. I hope yours is as simple.
Good Luck

Re: 1987 125HP Chrysler Force Tilt & Trim Motor - Does not stay up

This message is for J.R or gotsaved or anyone else that can help me. I received information from them on how to fix my tilt & trim. However, the first step (finding the quarter size plug that takes an allen wrench). Either I have a different tilt and trim or I am just blind, but I cannot seem to find it.

If either of you can can e-mail me at nrvelasquez@yahoo.com I would really appreciate it.

I have pictures of my tilt & trim and maybe you can point out to me where exactly the plug is.

If anyone else can help me I would also appreciate it.

Thanks again

Re: 1987 125HP Chrysler Force Tilt & Trim Motor - Does not stay up

Hey guys,

I need more help. I did what I read on the web. I removed both check valves. Replaced one check valve with a brand new one and changed the o rinin on the old valve. Put everything back together. Double and tripled checked it to make sure it was right. However, now instead of it going up and leaking down. Now it does not want to work at all. You can hear the motor working but the engine does not move (up or down) now.

Please help I am getting very frustrated.

This may be a stupid question but did you refill with oil?

Yes I filled it first with Transmission fluid and then I also tried regular hydraulic jack fluid from Walmart.

Another thought, I was told that this pump is self bleeding. What exactly does that mean and how is it done. I did try the switch, up and down, for approx. 1 - 2 minutes each way but nothing happened.

I did the same thing, and my tilt/trim would not work either. Then I remebered the shuttle valve and when I used presure to remove the first pilot valve(the part behind the snap ring)well the force of pressure shot the pilot valve and shuttle valve out and across my garage. I was in such a hurry to swap out the o-rings that I forgot to place the shuttle valve back in between the two pilot valves(what a pain) but once I fixed my mistake all was good

If by shuttle valve you mean the little black cylindrical looking piece that goes between the 2 check valves then I did remember to put that in.

Again my question with te self bleeding as I stated before. Could that be the problem.

Or could it be something else.
