Sounds like you were prepared to me, to have a good time anyway, lol Funny story, lol :)

I use to fish for chinook in chicago during snagging season. You should feel what A fight those are when you snag one towards the tail with a treble hook when there like 40 pounds. Use to take the females eggs and fish for rainbow trout with them. My biggest rainbow was 9 lbs off one of the jettys in chicago. I was just a kid back then. Good eating there over a cedar spiced grill. ;) Might have to make a trip north for some salmon runs sometime, congrats on the catch.

I agree CC, when you hook a big spawning Chinook in the tail it can pull the rod right out of your hands. These fish are not near spawning yet, but they are feeding fairly near shore...2 to 4 miles out or so...very clean fish. The King was a female and was beginning to develop her eggs. I kept those and froze them in order to try to use them later in the season as bait.

Each side of the King gave us 3 good sized fillets. We cooked one of them up on a Cedar Plank. WOW.

Don't wait for a run, CC, with a boat like yours, you can go get them. There is always something in fairly close. The furthest out that the Charter boats get is about 10 miles. These fish were in 75 feet of water only about 3 miles out...you run your boat further than that to get to work I'll bet. Heck, come on up and take a ride with me.

LOL, hardly prepared Marc, I usually don't wrestle with fish. I agree though, the memories we're making are priceless. ;)

Thanks for the congratulations. The big water is amazing...when it's calm. It's also amazing when it's not. We didn't get out this weekend at all. The weather was beautiful, but a wind from the North kicked the waves up to 5 to 8 footers. They're not rollers like on the ocean but short cycle like a continuous big wake. The boat can handle it, but this Captain can't. Fortunately, those North winds are rare in the summer. Watch the weather and come on up, I'll wrestle a fish for ya. :D

Re: 1987 28' Chris-Craft 283 Amerosport

when i had bought mine, somebody had already gone and purchased an aftermarket a/c unit. They had put it underneath the rear bench of the dinette but had it venting out the side into the head door. The only area that seemed to cool was right in the middle, so i recently modified the duct's and the aft cabin now stays frigid. I'm not really sure where you could hide the portable unit out of the way.... BTW you said you were pushing 4000 on an inboard setup. My Amero is setup with I/O so that could very well be the difference in speed

Thanks, lexasbajo, I don't have that aft-cabin, because my set-up is mid-engine Inboard. Without that aft-cabin and the ability to vent to the deck from there, I'm still a little stumped.

You could be right when you say that an Inboard may not be set-up to run much more than 4000 RPM. I want to remember reading somewhere that it should turn about 4500 RPM. I'll have to look for that paperwork. Even so, I'd expect a little more speed than what I'm getting. The drag characteristics between your boat with the IO and mine with an Inboard should be about the same. My horsepower is not far below a 5.0L IO at the prop. Just wondering out loud, I guess. I just suspect that I should be making 35 or better WOT and cruising in the 30 MPH range.

Best of luck catching those big cats...they are tremendous fun! I live on the Kankakee River and we get some good sized Flatheads and Channel Cats in the summer. They are a ball!!!!

I just read this entire thread from start until here. Fantastic thread! I mean that by all that have made contributions. My wife and I bought a project boat in May. Lets just say BSnB, I can completly relate to what you have gone through and wil do. I love the benchs! Hope to see those lights. I believe we are just down the "road" from you. We will be pulling our boat out in about two weeks to do some work on it at home.

Looking forward to seeing more of this thread. :D

Thanks, Chief. Great guys visit my thread, all with more knowledge than I've got! Down the way where, Chief?

Mainly fun on the water for us. I hope everyone else has been doing the same. Mostly we've been doing maintenace and minor repairs, but I did just finish installing AC. I bought a residential portable unit which fit perfectly at the opening to the V-berth. In order to vent the exhaust heat, I cut a 5 inch hole through the bulkhead into the storage area below the V-berth and then out the bow bulkhead and into the anchor locker. The exhaust hose runs into that locker and then up to a new chromed vent cap that I installed just center aft of the bow pulpit. It works pretty well but I still need to insulate the hose against radient heat. Pics later.

You need to be Hardcore like this one guy with a Trojan...cut out condenser, install inside home built head exchanger, install in bilge with water pump, run new lines between heat exchanger and window a/c unit, recharge...marine a/c at like 1/8th the cost lol

Wish I had that knowledge F14. Still, this was about 1/4 the cost of the water cooled marine systems, without drilling a hole in the bottom.

Re: 1987 28' Chris-Craft 283 Amerosport

I've got a new issue to deal with now though. Weekend before last, my brother-in-law was in town on business and the Admiral and I took him for a little cruise. Well, the port engine immediately began to overheat. I immediately shut it down and proceeded with our cruise on my remaining engine. I anchored at one point and dove under the boat to make sure the intake was clear...it was.

I returned to my slip and, short on time to do it myself, I called the Marina the next day to ask if they'd have the mechanic replace the impeller and look atthe engine. He did, but found that when he went to turn the intake ball valve back on, the handle broke. The seacock is the plastic/nylon kind and had become brittle. I bought 2 new bronze ball valves and have made plans, with the help of a plumber friend of mine, to pull the old valves and inwtall these new ones.

Oh...we're doing it wet! Wish me luck!

I'll send you a message about where we are at. I like your idea with the ac. That is something we need to do as well. Looking forward to the pics! :D

Thanks for the message, Chief. You are close! I've got the hole saw you need, Chief. Let me know when you need it...I'll even lend you some moral support. LOL

Re: 1987 28' Chris-Craft 283 Amerosport

Would love to see some pics of your A/C install. We have the same type of unit in our boat. I vented it through one of the v-berth port holes. I don't think I have the nerve to cut a hole in my boat. The good thing about this unit is it doesn't require a drain. The condensate evaporates through the exhaust hose.
The shelf we have it sitting on is where the filler cusion goes when using the v-berth but seeing as we don't use it it became the perfect spot for the a/c.

That looks like the same unit that I bought. I'll post up some pics, Dawg. I tried several locations before settling on its current location. I had to take the casters off in order to make it short enough to fit. My V-berth has a filler cushion sitting on a filler board that spans a notch at the center of the V-berth opening. By taking the casters off the unit, I was able to shorten the unit enough to just squeeze it under this filler board so that the face of the unit is now flush with the opening.

Looking at your photo, my unit sits below the cushion where your life jackets are, facing aft, with the exhaust hose running under the V-berth and forward to the bow.

Is that a TV??? Do you have to sit on someone else's boat to watch it? :D

Our v-berth is a solid piece. Under the mattress is a large storage area where the factory air would be installed.

LOL....yes that's a tv. It looks kinda large in that pic but it's only a 19" Here's a better pic of the cabin.
