I just had surveyed this boat as I am wanting to buy it. I had the boat hauled and hull washed (it needed it). It hasn't been run since May of 2005. I have it running now. Cylinder compressions are as follows:

1-118, 2-120, 3-125, 4-110, 5-120, 6-118, 7-118, and 8-116.

It idles good but when I took it out to plane (4500 rpms) it would not! It was as if you were pulling a tank.

Would appreciate your ideas and suggestions. The prop is OEM (15 1/2 x 17).

It could be a # of different things. What is the top speed it runs now? The last time I saw something like this on my friends boat. Turned out was that the engine needed a tune up. Another words it was ignition oriented.

Those aren't the best compression numbers I've seen but it could be the guage. They don't vary much so it's not all bad there. This is a 28' boat with a single? What engine and drive's in it?

If the engine runs to 4500 RPM, and stays running, the problem is not the engine. If the engine is turning the props, the props should be turning pretty fast. I would check the prop hub. may be spun, and the prop is not turning at the same speed of the engine. How fast is she moving at 4500 RPMs? My 85 2850 gets up on plane fast and doesn't even need full throttle do get there (twins). I cruse on plane easily at 3000 rpms (28 mph).
