I just bought a 1987 johnson 28hp, longshaft, remote controls. I was wondering if this motor has a charging system on it, as in it charges my boat battery when it runs? I was never sure on how exactly that works if someone would know and clue me in on how it works that would be great. thank you

Post the model # of the motor if you can, look for a plate on the transom clamps.

if there is something mounted on that bracket with a big circle in the middle of, yeah. That's the rectifier, it's a visual cue that a stator is mounted under the flywheel

?The dash panel( the panel that holds the key and choke switch) that came with the motor does have an ampmeter attached to it. Is this a sign that there is a rectifier on the motor too? From what I know(and I could be wrong), I thought there is a red wire(with an inline fuse) that runs from the solenoid to the rectifier.

it's acutally on the side of the motor, near the fuel pump. kinda hidden behind the bus terminal. I think your motor does have an alternator, because there was only one model 28 hp special, and it was electric start

It does, there is a stator and rectifier on the motor.

If it has an ampmeter, it has been added. They didn't come with one. In fact, I suspect you have a panel from an older motor. The ampmeter might not even be hooked up (??). Hey, put a voltmeter in the hole. Easier to hook up and more useful.

The rectifier should not be fused. But the wire betwen the solenoid and key switch should be.

Re: 1987 28hp johnson

I checked it out and it is an older style wiring controls, not a big deal for me. I ran the motor today and she ran great but the keyswitch didnt shut it off.I tried a different keyswitch and same thing. The magento kill switch wire had been cut, so I hooked it back up to how its sposed to be and it wouldnt shut the engine off. I did notice that the previous owner ran a switch to black and yellow wire(magneto kill switch), I see where he cut black/yellow wire and spliced in a switch.
My finger in the picture is the wire I was talking about, I know its not the key switch so would that mean theres a fault in the box where the wire goes in to.

It would be nice to have the key turn off the motor but if a new part is a fortune I can live with a switch, How would I wire up that switch? The guy had the black/yellow lead coming off the wire harness to one contact on the switch, would the other contact just be grounded?

BUMP
Looks like the part is a power pack(part # 583167). Is the magneto kill switch wire spose to go to the power pack? If so, is there something wrong with the power pack as in thats why my engine isnt shutting off?
