No of course it isn't. Think: if it seeps out it's going to leak out in use and water is going to get in.

If it really is lower unit oil then a gasket or O ring is letting it out.

BUT it is quite normal for unburnt oil from the fuel to leak out of the exhaust, which basically means any outlets and drain holes in the leg That will be black and gungy whereas lower unit oil will be, well the color of the oil you put in.

Sounds as though you have got away with the seizing up. A bit of blue smoke is no bad thing, it shows it's got plenty of lubrication. Run on 50:1 in future. Maybe a bit oilier even for a while in view of its recent experiences! Poor thing. If it starts easily and runs sweetly I would not go looking for trouble! Run it gently for a while as if you were breaking in a new one.

thats what I thought too.
It appears to be a light amberish (not really dark at all), similar to what I put in for lower unit oil. I'll add some more oil to the fuel so its more like 50:1 rather than the original stated 100:1. What should I do about that seapage? Where is the oring seal that maybe leaking? Behind the prop?

Must confess to being a bit puzzled. Places that gear oil could leak from are
  • the prop shaft seals, but then you see it coming from behind the prop when standing upright
  • the O ring seal between the prop-shaft rear bearing housing and the gear case, but that would leak when upright and be obvious,
  • the drive shaft oil seals but that would leak into the water pump and run out of the water intake and would only happen if lying on its front I think

As far as i can see there is not a top cover on the gear case, as there is on larger models, with a gasket that could leak.

What i cannot fathom out is how the shift rod fits in. That has a bushing and an O ring seal at its bottom end maybe that's the trouble

look at the diagram for the gear-case on the brp parts lists at "http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=e" if you do not already have a diagram.

Edit: Just seen your photo. Pretty sure its that O ring at the bottom of the shift rod.

when I removed the lower foot (twice), the "shift rod" is just a thin peice of metal with no seal on the end of it from what I saw
