Hello all,

I have the opportunity to buy a very nice 1974 Johnson 70 hp motor for a decent price. I currently have a 1987 50 hp Johnson on my boat. Will the controls (both electrical and mechanical) from my 1987 work on the 1974? Both have the "red" plug and the male/female connectors appear to be the same.

Also, I read that the 1974 has a hydromechanical shift mechanism...will this be a problem?

Thanks in advance for your help.

the controls are interchangeable, the lowers have been pretty dependable.

Nice to hear!

On further checking it turns out to be a 1975 model, from what I have found here on the forum, this shouldn't change things any.

I was concerned that the controller cable for shift and throttle wouldn't match up on the motor end. Will I need new cables for that, or maybe an adapter of some kind?

Thanks again.
