1987/ 70hp VRO Evinrude HELP!

ok, I am very well used to 5-10 &15 HPs Engines and now I bought a Cobia Monte Carlo 15.2 with a 70hp VRO (but oil is mixed in with the gas).
when I bought it last month it was working great.

NOW;

1. I cant keep the boat running on idle.

2. when putting on reverse I will feel the control box under the throtle going clonk,clank, clank, clank and not accepting the reverse. somethings playing with it I will get it to go.

3. I have a hard time turning engine on when cold but with some starting fluid ...vrooooooommmmm !

4. where can I get free squematics for this engine? any links etc?

I changed the plugs, the gas hose, the gas filter, sprayed some carb cleaner, and the problem persists.

What do I do now????

starting fluid may have been ok for car motors but it is a killer to an outboard.

try using gas/oil mix in a squirt bottle next time...your motor will live longer .

as for your problems...your shift linkage is probably out of adjustment....


I am not an expert on these matters but there is an adjustment on the cables inside the motor cover...and I think there is an adjustment on the control box itself....

the clanking is probably the lower unit gears...and just sounds like it is coming from the control box.

as i have learned many motors suffer regularly from contaminated carbuerators...

you might have to have them dissasembled and cleaned and ressaembled with new gaskets and o rings and needles.....if all other fuel delivery remedies dont work for you....

Thing about spraying carb cleaner into the motor is that, it gets sucked straight through, past the jets that need cleaning, into the cylinders where it does what it's designed to do: strip the oil off of metal surfaces. We don't want that.

Now, you have hard cold start and won't idle -- how is it otherwise? Warm starts, acceleration, cruise?

What do the spark plugs look like after its been running awhile? Especially if any have a different appearance from the others?
Are they Champion QL77JC4 in good condition and gapped at .030?

Hard cold start:
Most common cause: operator error.
Cold start procedure:
Open tank vent.
Pump primer bulb till firm.
Hi-idle lever full up.
Turn key "on", push it in (to prime), and hold for 5 to 8 seconds.
While holding key in, turn it over to "start". Release the key when the motor starts.
Use the hi-idle lever to keep it running till it warms up -- if it starts to falter, bumping the choke usually keeps it going.

Won't idle. Might be related to the hard starting problem.
Back to basics.
Compression, spark, fuel -- if she gets all three, she runs, otherwise she don't.
Do all three cylinders have about the same compression (within 5 or 7%)?
Do you get a strong blue spark on all three cylinders across a 7/16" gap on an inline tester clipped to the engine block?
Does your fuel line hold pressure?
Is the gasoline less than 4 months old or has it been treated with stabil or seafoam?
Is the tank clean and free from water and debris?

If the answer to all these questions is yes, rebuild your carburetors.

Shifting problem:
Disconnect the shift cable from the shift lever (starboard side of the powerhead) and see if it'll shift manually. See if the control box feels any different with it disconnected. Something may have broke off in control box, or slipped out of whack.

wow you guys are great.
spark plug is NGK-B8HS10 gap ? factory gap

Operator error? most probably because I have not done half the stuff in the procedure

I remember doing it the first week then I forgot the pushing of the key , the raising of the idle lever, will check tomorow morning with the ear moffs.

any additional hints please tell.

at your next available opportunity, acquire the Champion plugs. NGK makes a great plug, no doubt, but they aren't an exact match for heat range. This is not causing your present symptoms -- just not good for the long-term health of the motor.

Agree on the plugs
I have the same motor (Johnson) & had similar problems at first-
I rebuilt the carbs
De carbed the motor
Link 'n sync
VERY carefully checked & fixed small fuel leaks
Changed to Champion plugs
Runs great now & i also add a bit of Seafoam to each tank of mixed gas

You'd need one on/off toggle for ignition; put the black/yellow wire (kill circuit) on one post, black (ground) wire on the other. This switch will be *open* to run, and *closed* to kill.

Another on/off toggle for accessory power, with the red/purple (12V) on one post, and the purple (accessory) on the other. This powers whatever you have that is only on when the key is "on" -- gauges, electric choke, warning horn, anything else you've added.

There might be a way to combine those in one DPST switch, but the accessory switch is opposite of ignition (closed = off, open = on).

Choke switch (could be a toggle or a momentary switch) would get the purple/white (choke) and purple (from the accessory switch) wires.

Start switch (momentary) gets the start wire (yellow/red) on one post and red/purple (12V) on the other.

What is to winterize?

1. I come from a winter free land and am planing to move to Massachusetts. I see a lot of people mentioning of winterized boats
what is this and how is it done?

2. been told a lot to "get my carbs done" but am trying to learn to do all by my self (with your help) what exactly is meant by "getting them done"?
how do I do it? where do I learn in detail?

I dont know all that ius involved in winterizing a boat( mainly because that is when I use my boat up in New England during the winter !!)

mainly it is fogging the motor,basically it is coating everything with a oily substance...and putting a preservative in the gas....

as far as the carb rebuild, they have that taken care of here already in IBoats

it isnt easy....you have to follow steps closely and remember where everything goes.....

the carbs should be easy it is removing everything and putting it all back together so it fits under the cowl hood!! ha ha ha

round here we have winter, but it doesn't stop us boating. my entire winterization regime consists of:
1. change the gear oil before the first hard freeze -- so any water intrusion won't crack the gearcase open, and
2. tilt the motor fully down long enough to drain the powerhead before trailering home.
