Re: 1987 80 HP Mercury

I had an '84 4 cyl, or maybe it was an earlier model I sold in '84. The logo on the side of the cowl was red and blue and something else I think and at the rear of the decal, the stripes changed from horiz to vert in a continuous downward sweep. Used to laugh when I fished in the winter time. I would go to the launch and while doing the prep for launch would notice several boats sitting around the launch or on the trailer trying to launch.

I'd launch, put my trailer up and leave while they were still fooling with their engines trying to get them to start and run. It was quiet and reliable. Only problem I had was that I didn't order TT when I ordered the boat. Would have made it perfect.

A 1987 80hp is a 3 cylinder 71.1 CI motor, it is the small bore block and is same power head as the 70/75 and 90 hp, the only difference is carbs. This is a very good engine but has a little low end vibration. This is because of firing order(1-2-3) and in 93 they changed to a (1-3-2) order. Most people dont notice it but on some aluminum boats it would cause a harmonic vibration thru boat causing all kind of weird rattles..

Thanks Faztbullet...appreciate it.
It is an oil injected system? Does this baby come with a power TILT/TRIM feature?

I posted on the Engine Non Repair forums this morning about two lies in my response to this post. You probably know the answer to one of them. Would appreciate you takiing a peak at it....looking for the year model for a 85 4 cyl Merc.
