My 1987 90HP Johnson with T&T has a 35 AMP REC/REG on it (PN 395204), and the tach is not working right, it only goes to 3000 RPM. I did the connect the gray to the yellow and then the tach didnt work at all. I was looking at Stators also on IBoats and they only list a 6 AMP Stator for my motor. Why would they have a 35AMP rec/reg for a 6AMP stator? Any ideas? Does having T&T need a higher amp rec/reg?

The battery only gets 11.9 volts while running at any RPMs in water. I also reread the gray/yellow wire thread, and may have used the wrong side gray wire. But still would like to now why a 35amp Rec/Reg and 6amp stator.

Cant answer your questions about amp ratings but there is a procedure in the manual to test the diodes in the regulator/rectifier. My tach was acting up too and it turned out to be the regulator /rectifier since the diodes were fried. I understand that running the motor without the battery hooked up among other things will damage this item.

The water cooled rectifier/regulator installed on your engine is from a 175 hp V6 with the 35 amp alternator. It physically looks identical to the one originally put on your engine at the factory. The one you should have on that engine is a 585195 (superceded part,) which is a 3/10 amp V4 rectfier/regulator. The one you have is obviously not working, since the tach is malfunctioning and the volt gauge reads under 12 volts. After starting and some short run time, the regulated voltage should creep up to the 13.5 volt range on your gauge. A new regulator/rectfier is in the $ 110 range.

Is it possible that there is a 35 amp stator under the flywheel? Why is it that IBoats lists a 35 amp reg for a 1987 90HP w T&T, and only a 6 amp stator for same motor.

Why is it that IBoats lists only a 35 amp reg/rec for a 1987 90HP w T&T, and only a 6 amp stator for same motor. Any ideas? The reg/rec thats on my motor now, is a 35 amp. I see that they list a smaller amp reg/rec for the same motor without T&T. Does the T&T have something to do with the reg/rec?
